Encounters Between Brittany and the English-speaking World

An 8-year project led by CRBC (Brest/Rennes)

The Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique (Centre for Breton and Celtic Studies), which is based in Brest and Rennes will organize from 2012 onwards a series of biennial international conferences entitled

Les Rencontres Bretagne/monde anglophone (Brittany and the English-Speaking World)”

The conference will be part of a wider programme of events throughout Brittany (e. g. cultural events including concerts, art exhibits, etc.).

The CRBC will work with partners such as the Musée départemental breton in Quimper and other institutions in Brittany and abroad. Each conference will thus coincide with one or more exhibitions and other events, such as artists’ residencies and concerts.

The aim of the Rencontres is twofold:

-they aim at improving the knowledge and understanding of the relations between the two worlds

- they also aim at drawing together scholars from the academic world as well as from cultural institutions in the interest of research, international cooperation and culture.

The conferences

General organisation

Each conference will take place during 3 days and include:

The conference proper, itself composed of two parts
  • On Day 1 (Thursday) : we will welcome papers bearing on any topic related to the relations between Brittany and the English-speaking world)
  • On Day 2 (Friday), the focus will be on the relations between Brittany and one particular region or country in the English-speaking world, centering on the region/country’s relations with Brittany: Cornwall and the South-West of England in 2012, Ireland in 2014, Scotland and Wales in 2016, Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and North America in 2020.

The discussions will lead to two distinct publications.

The conference proceedings of Day 2 will be published within 6 to 12 months; the papers delivered on Day 1 of the conference will be published in the following years should enough papers on similar subjects emerge that will justify such a publication.

A guest writer or artist (e.g. visual artist or composer)

We shall invite an artist or writer from Brittany or the English-speaking world whose work spans the two cultures.

Visits to one or more exhibitions (or other cultural events)

A special visit to the museum or cultural institution staging an event related to the theme of the second day will be organized for participants.

 4. A visit of the area will be organised on the Saturday in partnership with local Tourist offices.

When feasible, either Day 1 or Day 2 will take place in a location other than Brest or Rennes, ideally in the city staging the cultural event.

Venue and scientific committee

The conference will take place in Brest and Rennes alternatively.

Jean-Yves Le Disez (CRBC-Brest) and Anne Goarzin (CRBC-Rennes) are the project coordinators.

They will be assisted by an organising committee, and for each conference, by a scientific committee and a committee of experts.

Practical details

- Speakers: registration and food is free of charge, except conference dinner (€25)

- Other participants (not reading a paper): registration €10, Thursday lunch €15, Friday lunch €15, conference dinner €25)

- Students: registration free. Thursday lunch €15, Friday lunch €15

The 2 calls for papers

28 June 2012

Relations between Brittany and the English-speaking world: towards a definition of the  object of research

Relations have long existed and/or exist between Brittany and the English-speaking world: What was/is the nature of these relations ? What events have brought together/opposed these two entities ? What writers, painters, musicians or other artists from the English-speaking world have been inspired by Brittany ? What travellers ? What did they see, where, when, how ? What Bretons found themselves similarly confronted with the English-speaking world, in what circumstances ? How do the two worlds, themselves diverse, see/frame their relations ?

During the inaugural day of a series of conferences that will span a decade we hope to discover our object of research as it emerges in some of its most well-known forms.

Papers are invited from linguists, scholars in literary studies, historians, art historians, sociologists, ethnologists, economists, scientists and specialists of all other disciplines on all subjects related to people, places, works and moments in a history still to be written of the interaction between the two worlds.

Relations between Brittany , Cornwall and the South-West of England

At once separated and united by the Channel, the two neighbouring finis-terrae seem at once close (because of their peripheral geographical position, their maritime past, the presence of a celtic language, etc.) and yet remote.

From a resolutely multidisciplinary perspective, we shall devote a whole day to a better understanding of these relations.

All disciplines and approaches are welcome. Suggested topics include

  • Saints and Breton immigration in Armorica
  • Contacts between artists’ colonies in Brittany and Cornwall
  • Works of literature set in both Brittany and the South-West of England (e.g. war novels)
  • Scholars and other people who have been involved in the two worlds
  • Music
  • Warfare and piracy
  • Economic relations
  • Geology, oceanography, etc.
