Interdisciplinary DFG Research Project „North African representations of Antiquity as forms of late antique and postcolonial knowledge production”

PhD position TVL 13 (75%) by first of November 2016 (maximum grant period three years) at the Department of Romance Studies - University of Mannheim.

The planned PhD-study will be part of an interdisciplinary project, which comprises two different perspectives on North Africa. First, a classical philological study of late antique Latin texts (at the University of Cologne), and second, a modern philological and cultural theory perspective on North-African texts in French. Starting from the question of memory and re-appropriation in cultural discourses of each epoch, the research project will elucidate the special function of these representations (for instance of the personality of Saint Augustine) in their respective era, in late antique North Africa at one hand and in contemporary societies of the Maghreb on the other. The study concerned here aims at conducting a philological analysis of a modern corpus, but will involve as well an in-depth study of the discursive strategies of the North African reception of Antiquity in an attempt to understand its historical and cultural impact on the author’s present environment and society. The doctoral candidate will graduate at the Faculty of Philosophy in the field of Romance Studies.

Application requirements:

A Master in Romance Studies including an excellent expertise in literature, especially in French and Francophone Literature.
