The Department of French and Italian and the Film and Media Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for our PhD program in Film and Media Studies with a Concentration in French. This interdepartmental PhD degree combines rigorous training in French language, literature, media, and cultures with a firm grounding in the history, aesthetics, and theories of film and media. This degree program is part of the department’s Film and Media research network. Students benefit from the opportunity to work closely with both faculty in French and distinguished members of the Film and Media Studies Program. Graduates from this program are uniquely trained to teach French and Francophone Studies and Film and Media Studies across departments. In addition to pedagogical training and experience in French, students in this degree also receiving training and teaching opportunities in Film and Media Studies courses such as History of French Cinema, World Film History, and Film Analysis. The French and Italian department and the Film and Media Studies program also have a long-standing collaboration with the Department des Arts du Spectacle at the University of Lyon 2 that provides research and teaching opportunities in France.

The University of Pittsburgh supports students for five years by providing full tuition scholarships, teaching and research fellowships, and individual health insurance coverage at no cost. Applicants from underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply as there are additional fellowships available at the University level.
