Applications are invited from suitably qualified people for the McCaughey Chair of French Studies. The University is seeking a scholar of international distinction with an outstanding record in one or more areas of research in French Studies, in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and in academic administration. The successful applicant will also have demonstrated academic leadership at a high level. The department of French Studies, which the Professor will normally be expected to chair, is located in the School of European, Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Studies, one of four Schools within the Faculty of Arts. The department presently has a total of approximately 500 students enrolled over all levels. It has a distinguished reputation in French Studies internationally, and its main research strengths include the history of literature and ideas from the 17th to the 19th century; functional linguistics and discourse analysis; Francophone literatures; contemporary French society and literature.

The McCaughey Professor of French Studies will be expected to represent the whole discipline internationally and in the local community and to work with members of the department and the Head of School, Professor Tony Stephens, in devising and implementing innovative teaching programs and research collaborations.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held within three months of the closing date.

Remuneration package: $115,022 p.a. (which includes a base salary Professor Level E $97,632 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's contribution to superannuation) increasing by 4% in September 2001.
