Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Mary Williams Research Studentship in French, tenable for a period of up to three years commencing 15 October 2000 (or, by arrangement, a date no later than 15 December 2000). The Studentship, created thanks to a bequest from Professor Mary Williams (the first Head of French in Swansea and first woman professor in the UK), will cover full-time academic fees (at the Home/EU rate) for the research degree of PhD and additionally provide a maintenance grant of £3,250 per annum. It is envisaged that a small amount of paid teaching (up to 3 hours per week) will be made available to the successful candidate, providing up to a further £45 per week during term.

The successful candidate will hold a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in French from a recognised university, and preferably (though not necessarily) a relevant one-year taught or research postgraduate qualification (MA or equivalent). He or she will be expected to submit a detailed proposal for a scheme of research in any area of French studies in which the Department has expertise and to register for a full-time PhD at the University. Interdisciplinary projects (involving at least a 50% French studies element but potentially requiring joint supervision from another department) will be considered on their merits. At the end of the first year of the studentship, the holder will be expected to apply to the Arts and Humanities Research Board for a studentship under Competition B, and if successful, required to renounce the Mary Williams award.

Details of current staff research interests and publications may be found at http://www.swan.ac.uk/french. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their research plans in advance with the member(s) of the department most suited to supervise their proposed research. Informal enquiries may be made, from 4 September, of the head of department, Professor Andrew Rothwell (tel. 01792-295967; email: a.j.rothwell@swan.ac.uk).
