Le congrès 2012 de la Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies se déroulera sous les auspices du Centre d’Études et de Recherches Comparatistes et du projet « HERMES – Histoires et Théories de l’Interprétation » (ANR, Agence nationale pour la recherche).
Le Congrès se tiendra à l'Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle (Sorbonne-Paris-Cité), à Paris, France, du 6 au 8 septembre 2012.
À l’occasion de son déplacement sur le Continent et du parrainage du CERC, la Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies s’ouvre cette année aux études et aux collègues comparatistes.
Le thème retenu, 'L'Interprétation', pourra lui-même être interprété très largement et intégrera la perspective comparatiste dans toutes les rubriques (au-delà des relectures et configurations culturellement situées, de l’intermédialité ou de la traduction). On pourra explorer l'interprétation comme pratique et concept au 17e siècle, ou l'interprétation de la période (particulièrement au vu de ce que les nouvelles théories et les perspectives récentes ont apporté à notre connaissance), ou encore l'interprétation par le dix-septième siècle de lui-même, de son contexte et de son passé, proche ou lointain: la manière dont les intellectuels et les gens en place et en vue ont lu leur monde et leur histoire - ce qui devrait permettre aux participants d'explorer les relations temporelles (interprétations actuelles du dix-septième siècle ou interprétation au dix-septième siècle des héritages et des renouvellements) et transversales (pratiques de la lecture et de l'exégèse, passages d'un genre à un autre, traduction, etc.).
Suggestions:
- Comment comprendre 'Le Dix-septième siècle'? Relecture et interprétation/ Que pouvons-nous apprendre de la confrontation des traditions interprétatives dans différents contextes linguistiques et culturels/universitaires ?
- Redéfinir/ reconfigurer le 17e s. à partir du présent.
- Instruments, théories, idéologies (genre, études postcoloniales, etc.).
- Le chercheur 'en situation' et son contexte culturel concret.
- Conflits d'interprétation.
- Adaptations modernes des oeuvres du dix-septième siècle (dans divers media).
- Lecture(s) du passé et définition/représentation de soi.
- Définition de soi/ définitions par l’autre : la confrontation d’oeuvres de l’époque appartenant à différentes aires culturelles et linguistiques
- Construire/interpréter l'histoire. Interprétation et histoire. Histoire et interprétation.
- Lecture et exégèse au 17e siècle.
- L'interprétation des signes: lire les émotions, lire le corps, etc. Superstitions, présages.
- Fiction et interprétation.
- Traduction et réécriture.
- Célébration et propagande comme interprétation de l'actualité et de la politique. Les beaux-arts et l'idéologie.
- De l'image au texte, du texte à l'image.
- Interprétation et jeu théâtral.
Les propositions (300 mots maximum) pour des communications d'une durée qui ne pourra pas dépasser 20 minutes devront être envoyées au Professeur Pierre Zoberman (université Paris 13 Sorbonne-Paris-Cité), organisateur du colloque (Zmanp@aol.com), ou au Professeur Richard Maber, secrétaire de la SSCFS (r.g.maber@durham.ac.uk). Les propositions excédant la limite seront renvoyées à leur auteur et devront être revues pour être prises en compte.
Date limite de réception des propositions: 5 décembre 2011.

Call for Papers/ Appel à communications
The 2012 conference of the Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies will be held under the auspices of the Centre d’Études et de Recherches Comparatistes (CERC) and the project “HERMES–Histoires et Théories des interprétations” (ANR, Agence nationale pour la recherche).
The conference will be held at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (Sorbonne-Paris-Cité), Paris, France, from 6 to 8 September 2012.
It will take place in France under the patronage of CERC, and the SSCFS welcomes comparative studies and colleagues in the field.
The theme will be 'Interpretation' and should itself be interpreted broadly. We encourage comparative perspectives under all headings (beyond what concerns situated, contemporary rereadings and reconfigurations, cross-media studies, or translation). Contributions might explore 'interpretation' as a practice and notion/concept in the seventeenth century, as well as 'interpretation' of the period (especially given what new theories and perspectives have brought to scholarship), or again, interpretation by the seventeenth century (how intellectuals and officials read their world and its relationship to the past), which should allow participants to explore both temporal relationships (current interpretations of the 17th century or interpretation of itself and the past by the 17th century) and transversal relations: practices of reading; crossings from one genre to another; translation, etc…
Some suggestions:
- How do we understand 'The Seventeenth Century'? Rereading and Interpretation./ What can we learn from the confrontation of interpretive traditions from different linguistic and cultural/academic contexts?
- Redefining/refiguring the seventeenth century: from today's perspective./ Reading the seventeenth century today.
- Instruments, Theories, Ideologies (Gender, postcolonial, etc.).
- The Scholar as Situated: Cultural Contexts.
- Conflicts of interpretation.
- Modern adaptations of works of the period (through various media).
- Readings of the past and Self-definition.
- Self-definition/ definitions by others: bringing together works of different cultural and linguistic areas at the time.
- Elaborating/ interpreting history. Interpretation and History. History and Interpretation.
- Exegesis and reading in the seventeenth century.
- Interpreting signs; reading emotions; reading the body, etc. Superstitions, omens.
- Fiction and interpretation.
- Translation and re-writing
- Celebration and propaganda as interpretation of current events and policies. Fine arts and ideological programmes.
- From image to text, from text to image.
- Acting and theatrical interpretation.
Proposals not exceeding 300 words, for papers of 20 minutes' duration, should be sent to Professor Pierre Zoberman (université Paris 13 - Sorbonne-Paris-Cité) the local organizer (Zmanp@aol.com) or Professor Richard Maber, Secretary of the SSCFS (r.g.maber@durham.ac.uk). Proposals that exceed the limit will be returned to the proposer for amendment before they can be considered.
Proposals should be received by 5 December 2011.

If you are likely to need accommodation during the conference, please indicate whether you would prefer to be put up in relatively cheap student accommodation or would rather make your own arrangements in one of the modest hotels in the vicinity of Paris III.
