CFP: A Taste of France: Exploring Identity through Gastronomy (NeMLA 2020 Boston, USA)

This panel seeks submissions relating to the Northeastern Modern Languages Association (NeMLA) 2020 Convention theme of Shaping and Sharing Identities, specifically through a gastronomic approach. Cuisine is a daily manifestation and interpretation of culture, and France is arguably the epitomic space in which to observe this phenomenon. French terroir, the connection between the land and its products, has long shaped the French culinary tradition and identity. However, throughout the centuries the land itself and people’s connection to it have shifted and transformed. Writers and artists have grappled with these changes through their portrayals of cultivating, preparing, consuming, and disposing of food. In the nineteenth century, for example, Grimod de la Reynière and Brillat-Savarin codified and philosophized on the manners of the table and la bonne chère. Balzac portrayed typical mealtime interactions at the Maison Vauquer and Zola depicted the bustling activity of Les Halles market. Recently, a veritable renaissance of food publications is taking place as evidenced by journals like Omnivore and bandes dessinées such as À boire et à manger (Long). In short, issues of the palate and the plate are ubiquitous in both fiction and non-fiction writing in France. We, therefore, welcome proposals that explore any aspect of French gastronomic writing from any time period.
