The new Inventing Futures programme at Durham University’s Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEMS) is pleased to announce that it is now recruiting to three 4-year fixed-term Career Development Fellowships (in French, History, and Italian) and three PhD studentships. These have been made possible by the generous support of Joanna and Graham Barker.

Successful candidates will each contribute to one of the three projects in Phase One of the Inventing Futures programme. The projects are ‘Imagining Alternatives: Utopia in the World’ (led by Professor Richard Scholar, French Studies); ‘Forging Social Solidarities during Religious Wars’ (Dr Tom Hamilton, History); and ‘Daphne and her Sisters: Framing Gendered Violence’ (Professor Ita Mac Carthy, Italian Studies).

Please circulate news of these Career Development Fellowships and PhD studentships to potential candidates, who can read more about and apply for the positions at .

Applications for the Career Development Fellowships close on 18 March 2025 and, for the PhD studentships, on 31 March 2025.

Informal enquiries may be sent to me at director.imems@durham.ac.uk.

All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.
