Trois postes de doctorants en langues romanes à l'Université de Stockholm (portugais, français, italien, espagnol ou langues romanes comparées) avec orientation littéraire et linguistique

The Department of Romance Studies and Classics at the Faculty of Humanities has about 70 employees and around 1,000 students per year. The main research areas are Literature Research, Romance Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Find more information at our research.

As a PhD student you have the opportunity of participating in the Faculty's Doctoral School, offering themes and courses characterized by interdisciplinarity and cooperation across subject borders.

Project description
The doctoral dissertation must be carried out within the Romance languages for which we offer education at research level, namely French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish (literature or linguistics). It is also possible to choose Romance languages general orientation. See our post graduate education.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree and courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits (hp), 60 hp of which must be in the second cycle, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in Romance Languages stipulates that applicants must have:
– passed advanced level courses of at least 30 hp in French, Italian, Spanish or Portuguese including a degree project of at least 15 hp.
– knowledge of English equivalent to the level of English 6 in the Swedish school system (this does not apply to students who have undergone university education where English is an entry requirement).

The same conditions of admission have to be fulfilled by applicants who have equivalent skills and degrees from another country, and requirements must be met by the deadline for application.

Selection
The primary assessment criteria will be the capacity for benefitting from the PhD programme in Romance Languages. Selection among eligible candidates will be based on the following:

Education. Assessment of both depth and breadth of previous education. Scientific production. The assessment takes into consideration the aspect of time, i.e. to what extent the applicant has shown ability to meet previous scientific obligations within given time constraints. In addition, the scientific progress is considered. Based on a Bachelor’s thesis, a Master’s thesis or other academic papers, the ability of the applicant to benefit from the education is considered according to critical ability, analytical ability, creativity and independence. Research plan. A research plan should be enclosed which covers the research problem and an outline of the research project. The research plan is assessed according to relevance, originality and completion within given time constraints (full-time work during a four-year period of doctoral studies). Available competence among supervisors. Ability to collaborate. The ability of the applicant to be collaborative is determined by personal references, certificates or interviews.

Please also consult local admissions regulations for the Department of Romance Studies and Classics at post graduate education.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. Employment may thereafter be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their education, but may engage in teaching, research and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
