Call for papers

Proposals are invited for an international conference on “Originators, Pioneers and Founders”, to take place at the University of Brest on December 7 & 8, 2012.  This will continue the discussion begun during a study-day, which took place in Brest on 10 June 2010, on the last heir of a dynasty, embodied in particular in the last Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus. We now wish to turn our attention to the figure of the founder, the constructor of a system, the creator of a body of work, the initiator of a new way of thinking or relating to the world, the discoverer of previously inaccessible places or unexplored regions of the mind, the first man or woman to set off in a new direction, where others had previously failed, or feared to go, the creator of a new tradition, or the builder ex nihilo of a new power base.

The “originator”, be it a man or a woman, is obviously part of a historical context, including his own existence and the event which he brings about and which marks a break with the existing order, creating a new and novel chapter in human history. This also involves a hierarchical conception of the world in that it produces a quantum jump, with a creative act bordering on the exceptional. The degree of change, significant progress, and the revolution produced crystallize emotions and passions: the originator becomes the object of idealization, of fantasy, and even of mystification. Patriarchs, prophets, precursors, heroes and conquerors, considered in the light of their posterity and the physical, spiritual, intellectual and cultural offspring they have engendered, constitute the most significant figures of the originator.

The reflexion to which specialists from a wide range of disciplinary fields are invited could be directed towards the initiatory aspects of the event, the individuality of its instigator, and the mystery, state of grace or more generally the context within which the creative process takes place. The question of what distinguishes these creators and precursors from the common run of mortals, can then be posed.

The question could also be directed towards the originator considered in relation to his posterity, the inheritance he has bequeathed, in the perspective of a spiritual, intellectual and/or psychological inventory, his bequest outlining an exceptional phenomenon of growth and progress or of decline; this could be at the level of a family as well as that of a nation, a succession and accumulation of characteristics and facts which define a state of decadence. From this point of view, particular attention will be given to the idea of transmission, including that of historical, literary or artistic judgment.

The possible approaches could include studies which are specific or comparative, literary, semiological, linguistic, artistic, historical, ethnographical, sociological, psychological, psychoanalytical, philosophical, epistemological, as well as, legal, economic, or political.

Presentations will last 20 min, followed by 10 min discussion. A publication of peer-reviewed articles based on these presentations will appear in the course of the year 2012.

Please send abstracts (3000 signs, name and research unit) and a short biography to Frederique.Mengard@univ-brest.fr and Bertrand.Lancon@univ-brest.fr by June 1, 2012.

Accepted abstracts will be confirmed by June 30, 2012.
