PHD and MA Studentships

The Department of French invites applications (UK and EU students only) for departmental studentships in any aspect of French Studies covered by its research interests. The studentships are in addition to the generous funding schemes already offered competitively by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and by the University itself. This means that if you successfully apply to be a postgraduate in the Department of French, you will be able to apply to FOUR different funding competitions: Department, School, University and AHRB. (Applicants will normally be expected to submit applications to the AHRB and the University, and to forego a departmental award if funding is offered by either of these).

The deadline for Department, School and University applications is 1 May 2001. For AHRB, in order for documentation to reach the University Administration, Parts 1 and 2 of the appropriate form (Competition A or B) need to be received in the Department by 30 March 2001.

At least one departmental studentship will be reserved for a PhD place. Funds are also available to provide either a second PhD studentship or one or more bursaries for promising MA candidates (taught or research), depending on the nature and quality of applications.

PhD
A departmental studentship covers academic fees for PhD study at the UK/EU rate and a maintenance allowance of £6,000. To supplement the maintenance allowance, up to three hours per week undergraduate teaching in the Department will also be available to suitable candidates, normally in their second or third year of PhD. Other paid duties in the Department, the School and the University are plentiful and should enable award-holders to increase their maintenance income to at least the current AHRB maintenance grant of £6,800.

MA
The Department offers both taught and research-based MA programmes. In the light of the applications received, there can be some flexibility in the final distribution of available funds, so that a full AHRB-equivalent maintenance grant may be available for an outstanding candidate, or several full-fees bursaries. Candidates who are successful in obtaining a full-fees bursary from the University or the School of Modern Languages, as well as a departmental bursary, will be permitted to retain both. All candidates should normally have a First Class or a very good Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent to a comparable standard) in French. Preference for the PhD studentship(s) may be given to candidates who have or are likely to have an appropriate Master's degree.
