Colloque : "Mourning in migration: death, grief, and melancholia in contemporary Maghrebi cultural production" (Lincoln, USA)

In keeping with the theme of the 20th/21st Century French and Francophone Studies Colloquium--parler la terre--this panel seeks to examine physical and affective expressions of mourning in works of contemporary Maghrebi cultural production.

Mourning and loss incite us to explore the materiality of death, as well as the act of burial or of “putting into the earth,” l’enterrement, while melancholia and grief emphasize the affective expression of death and dying. We will explore the connection between the physical and psychical affects of death and mourning. This examination into death will lead us to to reframe the experience of death as the literal “end” of the body in Maghrebi migrant literature and cinema. Specifically, we aim at understanding death and mourning in relation to migrants and the loss of la terre that accompanies migration.

We welcome papers that consider death, dying, mourning, the migrant’s loss of home(land), and grieving the mother(land), amongst other topics. Please send a 250-word abstract and a short bio to Siham Bouamer (sbouamer@shsu.edu) and Ryan Schroth (schrotrk@wfu.edu) by July 15, 2019. The panel organizers will then submit the proposed panel to colloquium organizers.
