Littérature comparée et Gender – Queer: vers un dépassement des identités?

Cette journée fait suite à celles du 6 février 2015, qui posait la question de savoir «comment articuler les croisements», et du 10 décembre 2015, consacrée aux enjeux spécifiques des «débuts de l’époque moderne». Elle prolonge la réflexion, en cherchant à approfondir les spécificités des approches queer au regard des croisements entre Gender et littérature comparée. Il s’agit de s’interroger sur le potentiel méthodologique et théorique apporté par la notion de queer lorsqu’on l’articule aux études et à la pensée du genre ainsi qu’à des corpus comparatistes.
Rappel du contexte scientifique
Nous repartirons ici de quelques-unes des prémisses posées pour l’ensemble de ce projet de croisement entre littérature comparée et gender:
Du canon à l’analyse des textes ou des genres littéraires, les Gender Studies qui se sont développées à partir des travaux des féministes des années 1970 et 1980, ont étendu les questionnements (au sens d’enquête, certes, mais aussi de remise en question) aux identités déviantes/dissidentes (LGBTI) et, dans la perspective de la théorie queer (après Sedgwick et Butler entre autres), à la résistance aux identités. Dans la dernière décennie, la dénaturalisation des genres sexués (et des rôles socialement assignés aux genres) a atteint aussi la masculinité, qui a perdu son caractère d’évidence. La prise en compte de ces développements théoriques dans les études littéraires a eu pour effet de rendre problématiques les objets culturels transmis de génération en génération de chercheurs et d’érudits. Il s’agit par exemple d’une réflexion sur le rôle des femmes dans l’émergence du roman en Europe aux débuts de l’époque moderne, ou de la mise en évidence d’une invisibilité culturellement produite de certains objets, de l’effacement ou de l’évaluation négative de tout un pan de la production littéraire en fonction de critères explicites ou implicites de genre (gender) – donc questions de canon – ou d’une relecture des textes (déjà reconnus ou non par la culture dominante) qui mette en évidence la représentation, la reproduction ou la construction d’identités et de rôles (le masculin, le féminin).
Questionnement
Nous mènerons la réflexion à la fois à partir des enjeux identitaires et d’une remise en question du binarisme sexué – selon l’idée que le queer constitue une instance de perturbation (radicale?) des identités et de résistance à la possibilité et à la volonté même de les fixer: «the open mess of possibilities, gaps, overlaps, dissonances and resonances, lapses and excess of meaning when the constituent elements of anyone’s gender, of anyone’s sexuality aren’t made (or can’t be made) to signify monolithically» (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, «Queer and Now», Tendencies, Durham (NC), Duke UP, 1993, p. 8.).
En arrive-t-on dès lors à «défaire» le genre (Judith Butler, Undoing Gender, 2004), un refus de la régulation des identités et des sexualités, qui ne peuvent être subsumées ou unifiées par la catégorisation? Comment articuler les effets déstabilisateurs du queer et le potentiel de défamiliarisation propre à la démarche comparatiste, qui travaille la confrontation entre des textes et contextes divers – que ce soit d’un point de vue culturel, linguistique ou médiatique?
On pourra développer une proposition selon les axes suivants qui ont déjà servi de base à la réflexion lors des deux journées précédentes du programme de recherche et dont la liste n’est pas exhaustive:
1- Problématisation de la notion même de croisement, les modalités et formes qu’elle revêt – croisement littérature comparée et queer bien sûr, mais aussi problématiques intersectionnelles ou intermédialité.
2- De même, une attention particulière pourra être accordée à la question de la traduction en lien avec la problématique de l’articulation entre littérature comparée et queer propre à la journée d’études.
3- Si la notion de queer, en tant qu’outil d’analyse, se pense dans un rapport d’opposition à la norme, quelles remises en question produit-elle en termes 1. de catégorisations génériques et formelles; 2. de périodisation ; 3. de canon?
Le cadre général est comparatiste. Cela signifie, certes, qu’on interrogera ensemble des contextes culturels et linguistiques, voire des media divers. Mais nous encourageons également l’envoi de propositions qui ouvriraient la réflexion en mettant en avant les différences d’approche des questionnements queer selon les contextes (universitaires, scientifiques). Ce sera l’un des enjeux épistémologiques et l’un des bénéfices de la rencontre de mettre en contact les spécialistes et les approches, ainsi que leurs contextes culturels.
Organisation pratique
Le format de la journée d’études du 16 septembre 2016 doit permettre l’échange le plus riche et nourri possible. Les interventions peuvent prendre deux formats:
- soit une communication complète d’une vingtaine de minutes, suivie d’une discussion générale;
- soit la diffusion d’un texte de travail à tou.te.s les participant.e.s en amont de la rencontre. L’intervenant.e disposera d’une dizaine de minutes pour présenter son travail ; un.e discutant.e réagira à cette proposition ; enfin la discussion sera ouverte à l’ensemble de l’assemblée.
Les langues de la journée d’études sont le français et l’anglais.
Les propositions pour soumettre une communication ou un texte (400 mots environ, et une brève présentation de l’auteur.e indiquant le statut universitaire, l’université et, le cas échéant, le laboratoire de rattachement, le domaine de recherche et quelques éléments bibliographiques) devront être adressées avant le 1er mars 2016 aux deux adresses suivantes: Anne Isabelle François (Anne-Isabelle.Francois@univ-paris3.fr) et Pierre Zoberman (ZPParis13@aol.com).

Comparative Literature and Gender – Queer: Beyond Fixed Identities?

This session follows upon the ones held on February 6, 2015, concerned with “Thinking the Crossings,” and December 10, 2015, devoted to the stakes specific to the early modern period. It will take the inquiry further by delving deeper into what specific insights queer approaches help develop with regard to the crossings between gender and comparative literature. We mean to assess the methodological and theoretical potential the very notion of queer may release when it is envisioned in connection with gender studies and conceptions of gender as well as with comparative corpuses.
Background
We are starting from some of the premises on which the whole project to cross-examine (literally) comparative literature and gender was established:
In the past few decades, the denaturalization of genders (and of the roles socially ascribed to genders) has affected masculinity, which lost its status of evidence. Literary studies took these theoretical developments on board. Cultural objects passed on from generation to generation of scholars became problematized. To quote only a few examples: new light was shed on the place of women in the emergence of the novel in early modern Europe and there was a reassessment of the culturally produced invisibility of certain objects, of the erasure or negative valuation of a whole segment of literary production on explicitly or implicitly gendered criteria. This is one way the canon was called into question. These concerns also resulted in new readings (or re-readings) of texts (whether already recognized by the dominant culture or not) that bring to the fore the representation, reproduction, or construction of gendered identities and roles (the masculine, the feminine).
Questions and directions
The exploration will be articulated both to issues of identity and to a problematizing of the sexual binary – following upon the premise that queer as a category is bound with (radical) destabilization of identities and resistance to the possibility and the very desire to fix them: « the open mess of possibilities, gaps, overlaps, dissonances and resonances, lapses and excess of meaning when the constituent elements of anyone’s gender, of anyone’s sexuality aren’t made (or can’t be made) to signify monolithically » (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, «Queer and Now», Tendencies. Durham (NC): Duke UP, 1993, p. 8).
Does it lead then to “undo” gender (Judith Butler, Undoing Gender, 2004), to refuse the regulation of identities and sexualities, which cannot be subsumed or unified through categorizing? How are we to think together the destabilizing effects of queer thought and practices and the de-familiarizing potential specific to the comparative perspective, which is bound with the confrontation of diverse texts and contexts – from a cultural, linguistic, or media standpoint?
We invite proposals along, but not limited to, the following lines, at the core of the reflections of the first two sessions of the seminar:
1- Problematizing the very notion of crossing, its modalities and forms – the crossing /intersection between comparative literature and queer, to be sure, but also intersectional or intermediality.
2- Similarly, particular attention may be paid to the question of translation, in connection with the perspective of the articulation between comparative literature and queer specific to the session.
3- If the notion of queer, as an analytic tool, is conceived of in opposition to the norm, how does it work to call into question 1. generic and formal categorizations, 2. periodization, and 3. the canon(s)?
The overall perspective is comparative. This means that we will bring together different cultural and linguistic contexts or even medias. However, we also encourage proposals that open up the discussion by bringing to the fore the differences among queer investigations according to contexts (academic and scientific). One of the epistemological dimensions – and one of the benefits – of the seminar will be to bring together specialists and approaches, as well as their cultural contexts.
The inquiry is envisioned in the perspective of comparatism. This means, naturally, exploring the connections among various cultural and linguistic contexts, or different media. But we encourage also proposals which foreground differences in the way gender issues are approached in different cultural contexts and fields (be they academic or disciplinary). In the end, one of the seminar’s responsibilities (and hopefully one of its results) is to bring together scholars and approaches, and their various cultural backgrounds.
Practical arrangements
The format of the session of September 16, 2016 will be designed so as to further as much as possible exchanges among participants, be they speakers or members of the audience. Interventions can take one of two forms:
- either a fully developed presentation of about 20 minutes, to be followed by a general discussion;
- or a working document circulated beforehand among participants. Participants will then present their work briefly (10 minutes), and a discussant will react to their propositions, before the floor is open to a general discussion.
The seminar’s languages will be French and English.
Proposals for either a conference paper or a working text (about 400 words, and a brief presentation of the author – institution, academic position, and, if applicable, research center, as well as areas of specialization and a few bibliographical indications) should be sent by March 1st, 2016 to both organizers, Anne Isabelle François (Anne-Isabelle.Francois@univ-paris3.fr) and Pierre Zoberman (ZPParis13@aol.com).
