Daddy, what else did you leave for me ? Daddy, what’d you leave behind for me ?!, les paroles d’un certain Pink dans l’une des chansons de rock les plus connues en disent long sur la figure du père à l’époque moderne : de sa présence et de son absence.
Le père et son nom, son pouvoir et son poids. Le père et ses représentations, ses manques et ses défauts. Enfin, le père et nos révoltes, nos attentes et nos rêves. Pour le dire autrement, le père symbolique ou fantasmé et un père réel, en chair et en os. La présence de l’un et/ou de l’autre ? Irréductible, immense. Aussi bien pour ceux et celles qui l’ont éprouvée que pour ceux et celles qui ne l’ont jamais connue. Or il faudrait pourtant préciser, interroger plus profondément. Voyons, donc : le père et son fils (depuis toujours, celui-là écrit sur celui-ci), le père et sa fille (relation qui est toujours loin d’être reconnue), le père et la mère. Une enfance névrotique comme prix à payer pour devenir écrivain. Mais est-ce toujours le cas ? Et qu’en est-il des écrivaines et de leurs pères, de même que des pères qu’elles mettent dans leurs écrits ? Les revoient-elles de la même manière que les fils ? Écrivent-elles toujours « dans la maison du père » (Patricia Smart, 1988) ? La maison a-t-elle changé ? Enfin, y a-t-il des pères qui ont la parole ? Questions à n’en plus finir.
Le père, malgré tout, est une figure paradoxale. Sa présence, si incontestable soit-elle pour la modernité, a toujours été à découvert et à découvrir, aussi à l’époque où son autorité était de mise. Dénoncé, dans les années 1960 et 1970, comme patriarche dont il fallait nous libérer, le père d’aujourd’hui vit une crise de légitimité qui s’inscrit certainement dans celle de masculinité. Le père se cherche. Lori Saint-Martin, dans Au-delà du nom (2010), l’a bien montré dans le contexte de la littérature québécoise contemporaine, en insistant sur la dissonance entre le Nom et un éventail de pères qui sont censés l’incarner. Il faut encore comparer pour avoir une vue d’ensemble. Voir des pères agir face au Nom-du-Père, mais aussi les voir agir dans les aires culturels et sociales qui sont à eux.
Le 12e numéro de la revue Romanica Silesiana (Presses universitaires de l’Université de Silésie, Pologne) sera consacré à la figure du père dans les littératures du 20e et 21e siècles en langues romanes et langue anglaise. Nous invitons à soumettre des contributions qui, à travers des domaines tels que la littérature, la philosophie, l’histoire, la psychanalyse, le cinéma et d’autres, permettront de mettre en dialogue des pères concrets et différentes formes de paternité s’exerçant au nom du Père, contre Lui ou au-delà de Lui. Les propositions d’articles de 200 mots au maximum sont à soumettre avant le 31 janvier 2016. Prière de joindre aux articles une courte notice biographique. Nous acceptons égalemenent des propositions de compte rendus d’ouvrages théoriques récents portant sur la recherche et la traduction littéraires.

Daddy, what else did you leave for me? Daddy, what’d you leave behind for me?! These words by a certain Pink, taken from one of the best-known rock songs ever written, speak volumes about the figure of the father in modernity, as far as both his presence and absence are concerned.
The father and his name, his authority and his burden. The father and his representations, his failings and his faults. At last, the father and our revolts, our expectations and our dreams. To put it another way, the symbolic or fantasized father versus a real father. Their presence, whether they go separately or not, is something that matters and, perhaps, something the matter both for those who have experienced it and those who have not. It is, however, essential to go deeper and see the light: the father and his son (the latter has written about the former since the dawn of time), the father and his daughter (a relation which has not been fully recognized yet) and the father and the mother. Is a neurotic childhood the price to be paid for having become a writer? But is it always the same for male writers and female writers? What about female writers’ fathers and the ways these women put them into their writings? Do they still write “in the house of the Father” (Patricia Smart, 1988)? Has the house changed? And, last but not least, are there fathers who speak?
The father is, after all, a paradoxical figure. His presence, however indisputable it is for modernity, has always been threatened with exposure. Denounced, in the 1960s and 1970s as a patriarch from whom one had to liberate, the father nowadays goes through the crisis of legitimation which certainly results from the crisis of masculinity. Crudely speaking, the father has not found himself yet. In his book Au-delà du nom (2010), Lori Saint-Martin has showed this search in the context of the recent Québécois literature by highlighting the clash between the Name-of-the-Father and a whole range of fathers who are supposed to embody it. In order to give an overall view, one may, however, try to compare and see fathers facing the Name-of-the-Father and, at the same time, look at them in cultural and social areas to which they belong.
The 12th issue of Romanica Silesiana (University of Silesia Press, Poland) aims at discussing the figure of the father in the 20th and 21st century literatures in Romance languages and the English language. In order to get different forms of paternity to talk to each other, we would like to welcome papers covering research areas such as literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, history, cinema and others. Brief article abstracts of c. 200 words, together with a short biographical note, should be e-mailed by January 31, 2016. We also accept proposals of book reviews on literary and translations studies.
