Event or Incident – On the Role of Translations in the Dynamics of Cultural Change

Are translations to be classified as coincidental reactions or key moments in the processes of cultural transfer? When does a translation constitute no more than a incidental moment of reception and when does it represent radical cultural change? Within a research agenda that is concerned with processes of cultural transfer involving texts or text-related artefacts, the role of translations is an crucial issue. Western culture in the modern age is highly dynamic, oscillating continuously between tradition and innovation, inspired by models from the past and yet continuously open to new stimulae from other cultures and from ongoing technological innovations that produce new media: what role did texts play in these dynamics, especially when they were subject and object of translation?
Papers on the role of translations in the dynamics of cultural exchange are solicited for submission to the 4th issue of the yearbook Genèses de Textes/Textgenese(n) (Bern: Peter Lang). Title and abstract of the contribution must be submitted by 1 January 2009 to the editor of the volume, Ton Naaijkens (University of Utrecht): ton.naaijkens@let.uu.nl
Papers may be written in English, French or German and must be submitted by 1 June 2009 All submissions must reflect original work and must adequately document any overlap with previously published or simultaneously submitted papers from any of the authors.
