Contract type: Full-time; permanent

Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor** (or Professor) of Italian in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. The successful candidate will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at St Hugh’s College and to Stipendiary Lecturerships at New College and Oriel College.

We intend to appoint a candidate with research interests in modern Italian Studies – either twentieth-/twenty-first-century Italian literature, or the Italian literature of migration, or both. An ability to deliver high-quality undergraduate teaching (lectures, tutorials, and seminars) in both of these fields is essential, as is evidence of excellence in postgraduate teaching and supervision. An ability to contribute to teaching in film and/or the capacity to teach Dante at undergraduate level will be an advantage. Candidates should have native or near-native competence in both English and Italian. Please see the Job Description and Selection Criteria  (click on Job Description and Selection Criteria under 'Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of Italian' here) for further details. Candidates will have to complete and submit the Cover-Sheet (click on Cover Sheet under 'Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of Italian' here) together with their application for the role.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Thursday 20th January 2022 can be considered. Presentations and interviews have been scheduled to take place on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th March 2022. The anticipated start date is 1 October 2022.

Enquiries about the post should be addressed either to the Chair of the Modern Languages Faculty, Professor Almut Suerbaum (chair@mod-langs.ox.ac.uk), and/or to the Senior Tutor of St Hugh’s College, Professor Robert Vilain (robert.vilain@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk).

** The grade of Associate Professor is Oxford’s equivalent to a range of academic grades in other UK universities (including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader), to certain US professorial grades (including Assistant and Associate Professor), and to the Italian grade of Professore Associato.
