The Department of French and Italian at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications from outstanding students for its PhD program in French Studies. Strengths of our faculty include literature and the visual arts, gender studies, 17th and 18th century moral theory, philosophies of fiction, francophone literature, and medieval and Renaissance studies.

The graduate program in French Studies seeks to offer broad exposure in the field of French Studies as well as more specialized training in the student’s chosen area. Our program is designed from the ground up to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration between our doctoral students and faculty in affiliated areas such as History, Art History, Film, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, etc. Students are also encouraged to complete interdisciplinary portfolios in such areas as Women’s and Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Medieval Studies, European Studies, Romance Studies, Museum Studies, and African/African-American Studies. Finally, we offer strong mentorship and professionalization guidance to prepare our students optimally for their careers.

The department is pleased to announce scholarship packages of $25,000 annually for up to six years of graduate study. These typically consist of a combination of teaching and fellowship support, except in the first and final years where full fellowship aid is offered. In addition, all students are eligible to receive up to $1000 annually to present work at academic conferences. Last but not least, the department has an excellent placement record for its graduates: http://utex.as/go/fritjobs
