TheDepartment of French and Italian at the University of Iowa invites excellent and motivated students interested in pursuinggraduate studies in French to apply for a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in French and Francophone World Studies. The internationalreputation and strength of our program was acknowledged when it earned its newname of French and Francophone World Studies in 2008, accurately reflecting itsinnovative cross-disciplinary nature with related units across campus and withinthe area of French and Francophone Studies. Our student body also represents avariety of cultural backgrounds, from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean fromEurope to North America, and North and sub-Saharan Africa.
Areas of Study: Graduate students in Frenchand Francophone Studies benefit from the expertise of a nationally andinternationally known faculty. Courses are available in the traditionallyrecognized historical periods of French literature, as well as in variousliterary genres, critical theories, and culturalstudies. The Department provides a wide variety ofcourses in Francophone literatures and cultures from Canada, the Caribbean, theIndian Ocean, North and sub-Saharan Africa, the literatures of immigration inFrance as well as in Film Studies and Women Studies. We have specific strengthsin Interdisciplinary studies in the areas of Comparative arts, Early ModernStudies, Ecological criticism, Film Studies, Francophone and PostcolonialStudies, History, and Women's Studies. The recent inclusion of courses inArabic and Swahili reflects the dynamism of our program and brings newstrengths in cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary research and teaching. Forexample, our Ph.D. students may create their own individual program ofinterdisciplinary studies by forming an Ad Hoc committee with members fromother departments on campus. In recent years, students' Ad Hoc committees haveincluded faculty from the departments of Art and Art History, Cinema andComparative Literature, English, History, Journalism, Religious Studies, Women'sStudies and the Law School. We regularly collaborate with the Department of Cinemaand Comparative Literature on an Ad Hoc Ph.D. program in Film/French that allows students totake advantage of The University of Iowa's outstanding resources in FilmStudies.
Teaching: Students have theopportunity to teach for two years at the MA level, and four years at the Ph.D.level. Students participate in a pedagogically sophisticated program providingsupport for novice teachers. The University of Iowa is well known forits cutting edge use of technology in second language teaching. First- andsecond-year classes are taught in fully equipped, web-connected technologyclassrooms and the use of new technology (video, multi-media materials, webbased material) is part of the curriculum. In their last year students teach Third-Yearcourses in our vibrant undergraduate program with close to 100 majors. Theremay be an opportunity for qualified students to teach Arabic, Italian or Swahiliwithin the Department.
Exchange Programs: Every year, graduatestudents have the opportunity to teach English for the academic year in ourexchange programs with Université de Poitiers, and Université dePau et des Pays de l'Adour.
Financial Support: Students receive financial support throughDepartmental teaching assistantships and other University fellowships. Half-time teaching and research assistants are paid a stipend of$16,575 for the academic year. A tuition scholarship of$7,224 per year (2010-11) is also paid. The Presidential Fellowship is the most prestigiousUniversity-wide fellowship program awarded for five years to applicants with anexceptional academic record. It offers outstandingfinancial support that includes stipend, tuition, mandatory fees, a generoushealth insurance allowance, and a service-free year in the first and finalyears of study. The Dean's Graduate Fellowship program promotesrecruitment of excellent students who are underrepresented in their graduatediscipline. The amount of the Dean's Fellowshipis $18,000 for the academic year + $4,000 in the summer. Otherfellowships are available for dissertation research and writing as well astravel to conferences. Special minority fellowships exist, and minorities arestrongly encouraged to apply.
InterdisciplinaryResearch and Activities: In addition to course offerings in several departments, ourstudents may take advantage of Crossing Borders, an interdisciplinarycross-area graduate training program in the social sciences and humanities. Students are encouragedto present their research in lively and enriching interdisciplinary researchgroups housed in International Programs such as the African Studies Program,the Caribbean Diaspora and Atlantic Studies Program, the European StudiesGroup, the Middle East and Muslim World Studies Group, and the 18thand 19th Century Interdisciplinary Colloquium. TheFrench and Italian Forum, our lecture series, is another venue for graduatestudents to hear presentations by national and international scholars, and meetwriters from the world-renowned University of Iowa International WritingProgram. The Forum also gives ABDs the opportunity to prepare for conferencesand job interviews. We also encourage advanced graduate students to publisharticles and book reviews in respected journals. In spring 2009, our graduatestudents organized a very successful University of Iowa Graduate Symposium inFrench and Francophone Studies around the topic of "Trespassing,Translation, Transcendence and Transvestism: Finding Comfort in the Space Between."
Placement: The Department'soutstanding placement record for our graduate students in French andFrancophone World Studies reflects our commitment to professional training andcareer planning. Extensive one-on-one contact between faculty and graduatestudents, our required course on pre-professional acculturation, and training forinterviews prepare them for success on a national and international level. Trainingworkshops are also provided for grant writing and effective searches for careeropportunities.
