La nature n'est plus un décor. Opus 4. Les cosmologies de l'opéra à l'aune des dérèglements de la Terre
Coorganisé par le Théâtre national de l'Opéra Comique et l'Université Paris 8, dans le cadre du projet "Opera and Climate Change" mené par Isabelle Moindrot à l'Institut universitaire de France (IUF), il aura lieu les 28 et 29 octobre 2025, à la Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Île San Giorgio Maggiore à Venise), en partenariat avec l'Istituto per il Teatro et il Melodramma (Fondazione G. Cini) et le Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française.
Mettre en scène les éléments de la nature relève depuis toujours du défi artistique. Il s’agira de questionner les changements de représentation du monde dont l’opéra conserve la trace, en s’attachant particulièrement à trois moments clés de son développement : l’émergence du genre quand sont posées les bases d’une cosmologie lyrique inspirée par l’Antiquité, à l’aube de la modernité scientifique ; l’époque romantique où le développement de la société industrielle marque une accélération dans les usages de la nature ; des années 1960 à aujourd’hui, où les inquiétudes écologiques invitent à explorer de nouveaux nouages avec le monde.
Les participants du colloque évoqueront la présence matérielle des éléments et du climat dans les théâtres lyriques, qu’ils aient été utilisés ou représentés à des fins artistiques, ou qu’ils aient fait irruption dans la vie des théâtres du fait des dérèglements de la Terre. Le colloque fera alterner paroles de chercheurs et d’artistes, dans des formats de courtes interventions et de tables rondes, faisant dialoguer historiens du théâtre et de la musique, philosophes et scientifiques (histoire du climat, géophysique), afin d’aborder un large spectre de sujets et d’esquisser des pistes de renouveau pour le genre lyrique.
La ville de Venise, par la splendeur de son héritage et la vitalité de ses artisanats, mais aussi par les particularités de son site et les risques matériels et symboliques qu’il affronte déjà (montée des eaux, muséification…) est un magnifique lieu d’ancrage pour penser ces mutations successives et les déséquilibres à venir.

Nature is no longer a decor. Opus 4. The cosmologies of opera in the light of global climate change
Co-organised by the Théâtre National de l'Opéra Comique and Paris 8 University, as part of the ‘Opera and Climate Change’ project led by Isabelle Moindrot at the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), it will take place on 28 and 29 October 2025, at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice), in partnership with the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma (Fondazione G. Cini) and the Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre for French Romantic Music.
Staging elements of nature has always been an artistic challenge. The aim is to examine the changes in the representation of the world that opera has preserved, focusing in particular on three key moments in its development: the emergence of the genre when the foundations of a lyrical cosmology inspired by Antiquity were laid, at the dawn of scientific modernity; the Romantic era, when the development of industrial society marked an acceleration in the use of nature; and from the 1960s to the present day, when ecological concerns have prompted us to explore new connections with the world.
Participants in the conference will discuss the material presence of the elements and climate in opera houses, whether they have been used or represented for artistic purposes, or whether they have burst into the life of theatres as a result of the Earth's disruptions. The conference will alternate between presentations by researchers and artists, in the form of short talks and round tables, bringing together theatre and music historians, philosophers and scientists (climate history, geophysics) to address a wide range of topics and outline paths for renewal in the opera genre.
The city of Venice, with its splendid heritage and vibrant crafts, but also due to the unique characteristics of its location and the physical and symbolic risks it already faces (rising sea levels, museumification, etc.), is a magnificent setting in which to reflect on these successive changes and the upcoming imbalances.

La natura non è più un décor. Opus 4. Le cosmologie dell’opera alla luce dei mutamenti della Terra
Coorganizzato dal Théâtre National de l’Opéra Comique e dall’Università Paris 8, nell’ambito del progetto “Opera and Climate Change” diretto da Isabelle Moindrot presso l’Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), il convegno si terrà il 28 e 29 ottobre 2025 presso la Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, Venezia), in collaborazione con l’Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma (Fondazione G. Cini) e il Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française.
Mettere in scena gli elementi della natura è da sempre una sfida artistica. Il convegno si propone di interrogare i mutamenti nella rappresentazione del mondo di cui l’opera lirica conserva la traccia, soffermandosi in particolare su tre momenti chiave del suo sviluppo: la nascita del genere, quando si gettano le basi di una cosmologia lirica ispirata all’Antichità, all’alba della modernità scientifica; l’epoca romantica, in cui lo sviluppo della società industriale accelera l’uso e la trasformazione della natura; infine, dagli anni Sessanta a oggi, quando le preoccupazioni ecologiche spingono a esplorare nuovi intrecci tra arte e mondo naturale.
I partecipanti al convegno rifletteranno sulla presenza materiale degli elementi e del clima nei teatri lirici, siano essi stati utilizzati o rappresentati a fini artistici, oppure siano irrotti nella vita dei teatri a causa dei mutamenti della Terra. Il convegno alternerà interventi di ricercatori e artisti, con brevi comunicazioni e tavole rotonde che metteranno in dialogo storici del teatro e della musica, filosofi e scienziati (storia del clima, geofisica), per affrontare un ampio spettro di temi e delineare nuove prospettive di rinnovamento per il genere lirico.
La città di Venezia, con lo splendore della sua eredità e la vitalità dei suoi mestieri d’arte, ma anche con le peculiarità del suo sito e i rischi materiali e simbolici che già affronta (innalzamento delle acque, museificazione...), costituisce un luogo straordinario per riflettere su queste trasformazioni successive e sugli squilibri futuri.
