INTERNATIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLOQUIUM

Submissions are invited for a one-day international colloquium hosted by the Centre for Seventeenth-Century Studies at the University of Durham (UK) on the theme of "Martyrdom and Martyrs: Early-Modern Perspectives". The colloquium is interdisciplinary, therefore proposals would be welcome from all branches of literary and scientific research, the visual arts, and theology and any other related fields. The topics could range from, but not be limited to: political, religious and secular martyrs, the representation, evolution and understanding of martyrdom in the early modern period, and explorations of the inherent ambiguities of the martyr-figure.
The conference will be held on Thursday, 11 April 2002 at St John's College, Durham. Selected papers will be published. Graduate students are particularly encouraged to apply. Please send a 400 word abstract by 15 January 2002, or for further information contact the conference organiser.
