APPEL A CONTRIBUTION

-          l'organisation régulière de concours littéraires dont l'impact sur la productivité des écrivains est notable : nous pouvons citer le Grand Prix National des Arts et des Lettres, le Grand Prix Littéraire du Président du Faso, entre autres ;

-          l'obtention de prix internationaux par des écrivains burkinabé : Maître Frédéric Titinga Pacéré, Patrick Gomdaogo Ilboudo, Bernadette Dao, etc. ;

-          la foire internationale du livre de Ouagadougou organisée annuellement depuis 2000 et constitue un rendez-vous important pour les écrivains, les éditeurs, les critiques, et le public ;

-          l'organisation de l'administration culturelle avec une direction du livre et de la promotion littéraire et une bibliothèque nationale ;

-          la prise en compte de la littérature burkinabé dans les programmes d'enseignement, notamment avec un intérêt très prononcé des chercheurs pour celle-ci ;

CALL FOR PAPERS

(nov. 2004)

The journal TYDSKRIF VIR LETTERKUNDE of the University of Pretoria (South Africa) is preparing a special issue on Burkina Faso, which will be titled: Burkina Faso: Emerging Literature and Artistic Creation. Cultural Identity through Literature and Arts

This special issue will be coordinated by Pr. Amadou BISSIRI and Dr. Salaka SANOU from the School of Letters, Arts and Communication of the University of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Scheduled to appear in August 2006, this Special Issue will accept papers in either English or French (though contributors are encouraged to use English) and in three main areas: written literature, oral literature, and the arts.

         Located in the heart of West Africa, Burkina Faso is a Sahelian country with a rich cultural and artistic patrimony exemplified not just by its literature but also and especially by the numerous national and international cultural events it hosts: the Pan-African Film and Television Festival (Fespaco), the Nation Cultural Week (SNC), the International Ouagadougou Craft Show (SIAO), the International Festival of Theater for Development (FITD), the International Festival of Theater and Puppet of Ouagadougou (FITMO), the Atypical Nights of Kougougou (NAK), etc.

From a literary perspective, Burkina Faso is an emerging country. Since the 1990s, Burkinabe literature has been blossoming, especially thanks to:

- the regular organization of literary contests, which have had a notable impact on the productivity of literary writers. Some of the most outstanding literary contests are: the National Grand Prix for the Arts and Letters, the Literary Grand Prix of the President of the Republic, etc.

         - the international awards won by a number of Burkinabe writers : Frédéric Titinga Pacéré, Patrick Gomdaogo Ilboudo, Bernadette Dao, etc.

- the international book fair of Ouagadougou, organized annually since 2000. This is a particularly important event for writers, publishers, critics, and the public.

- the structuring of the cultural administration, which now boasts a department of books and literary promotion, and a national library.

- the introduction of Burkinabé literature in school curricula, and especially a growing interest of researchers for it.

         This development of Burkinabé literary production has also been possible thanks to the rich cultural foundation available for writers to draw inspiration from. Written literary productions use creative forms and techniques borrowed from oral tradition, which lend their works a unique voice.

         With such a cultural panorama, it is obvious that a Special Issue dedicated to the literature production of Burkina Faso cannot be limited to the written form. We therefore call for papers on the following themes and sub-themes:

1- Written literature

-         A study of the different genres

-         Literary analyses (thematic, aesthetic studies, etc.)

-         The life and operation of the literary institution

-         Literary reception

2- Oral literature

-         A study of the different genres

-         Oral literature/Oral tradition

-         Innovation in orature

-         Situation of the research in oral genres

-         The issue of orature

3- Cultural events

-         Film

-         Dramatic arts

-         Art festivals

-         Artistic production and the issue of development

Papers that take a comparative approach across these areas are also welcome.

Paper proposals (about 200 words) are expected on 31 March 2005. The full-papers should not exceed 15 pages (bibliography included) and should be presented in a clear typed format with at least 2.5 cm all around, and in double spacing (including quotations, notes and references).

         Graphics are welcome but should meet the following requirements:

-         be submitted in camera-ready as well as in digital format.

-         be provided with the appropriate caption

-         have a resolution of at least 300dpi and be submitted in a format no smaller than A5.

The deadline for sending full papers is 31 October 2005.

Proposals and full papers are to be sent in MSword format attachment to the editors at any of the following addresses:
