Since its founding, the International Network for the Study of Lyric (INSL) has sought to foster intenational dialogue and to renew critical perspectives on lyric by bringing together diverse theoretical frameworks, corpora, and practices. Previous conferences have explored the situatedness of lyric, its forms of between-ness, its experiential and attentional dimensions, the dialogue between criticism and creation, and poetry’s anchoring in past and present (Boston 2017; Lausanne 2019; Leuven 2021; Oslo 2023; Montréal 2025). Building on these inquiries, the sixth INSL conference proposes to turn to a question that has long haunted lyric theory while gaining renewed urgency today: its relationship to narrative.
Traditionally defined through brevity, intensity, voice, and the present moment, lyric has often been opposed to narrative understood as temporal unfolding, plot, and causality. Yet this opposition has repeatedly been challenged—by hybrid forms such as the verse novel, the prose poem, autobiographical and documentary poetry, spoken word, song, and performance, as well as by non-Western traditions and contemporary digital practices. Conversely, narrative itself is frequently permeated by lyric modes: condensation, repetition, affective address, rhythm, and figural language.
This conference invites participants to explore the intersection of lyric and narrative in its many formal, linguistic, historical, and cultural correlatives. How do lyric and narrative intersect, contaminate, or reconfigure one another? What happens to voice, subjectivity, temporality, and address when lyric adopts narrative structures—or when narrative becomes lyricized? How do these crossings reshape our understanding of genre, reading practices, and critical categories? And what are the stakes of such hybridizations in relation to memory, history, politics, identity, and community?
We welcome proposals that address, among others, the following (non-exhaustive) themes:
-Lyric narrative, narrative lyric, and hybrid genres (verse novels, documentary poetry, prose poetry, …)
-Temporality, event, and plot in lyric forms
-Voice, persona, and storytelling in poetry -Lyric, narrative, and subjectivity (autobiography, autofiction, testimony)
-Lyric and narrative across media (song, performance, cinema, digital and social media)
-Transcultural and translingual perspectives on lyric–narrative relations
-Historical perspectives on the lyric/narrative divide
-Lyric, narrative, and politics (collective histories, counter-narratives, minor or marginalized voices)
-Lyric and nature writing
-Theoretical and conceptual re-evaluations of genre and form
-Pedagogical approaches to lyric–narrative intersections
-Translation, circulation, and reception of hybrid forms
-Research-creation and practice-based explorations
Faithful to INSL’s commitment to dialogue between theory and practice, the conference will feature a variety of formats, creative and critical, alongside traditional papers. We therefore invite proposals for individual papers, panels, round tables, workshops, lecture-performances, and other experimental or collaborative formats engaging with the conference theme.
While contemporary forms and practices remain central to current debates, the conference encourages contributors to reflect on how lyric–narrative relations operate across longer historical trajectories and warmly invites proposals devoted to pre-contemporary traditions, from medieval and early modern lyric to nineteenth-century poetry.

Depuis sa création, l’International Network for the Study of Lyric (INSL) s’attache à renouveler les perspectives critiques sur la poésie lyrique en réunissant des approches théoriques, des pratiques et des corpus variés. Les colloques précédents ont notamment exploré l’inscription contextuelle du lyrique, ses formes d’« entre-deux », ses dimensions expérientielles et attentionnelles, les interactions entre critique et creation, ainsi que les ancrages de la poésie entre présent et passé (Boston 2017 ; Lausanne 2019 ; Leuven 2021 ; Oslo 2023 ; Montréal 2025).
Dans le prolongement de ces travaux, la sixième rencontre de l’INSL se propose d’aborder une question qui traverse de longue date la théorie du lyrique et qui connaît aujourd’hui un regain d’intérêt : le rapport entre le lyrique et le narratif.
Traditionnellement associé à la brièveté, à l’intensité, à l’expression d’une voix et à l’ancrage dans le présent, le lyrique a souvent été opposé au narratif, entendu comme déploiement temporel, intrigue et causalité. Cette opposition a toutefois été régulièrement remise en cause, notamment par l’émergence de formes hybrides telles que le roman en vers, le poème en prose, les poétiques autobiographiques ou documentaires, le spoken word, la chanson ou encore la performance, sans oublier certaines traditions non occidentales et les pratiques numériques contemporaines. Inversement, le récit lui-même est fréquemment traversé par des procédés relevant du lyrique : condensation, répétition, adresse affective, rythme ou langage figuré.
Ce colloque invite ainsi à explorer les multiples modalités d’interaction entre lyrique et narratif dans leurs dimensions formelles, linguistiques, historiques et culturelles. Comment ces deux régimes discursifs se rencontrent-ils, s’entrecroisent-ils ou se reconfigurent-ils ? Qu’advient-il de la voix, de la subjectivité, de la temporalité ou encore de l’adresse lorsque le lyrique emprunte des structures narratives—ou lorsque le récit se trouve « lyricisé » ? Dans quelle mesure ces croisements invitent-ils à repenser les catégories génériques, les pratiques de lecture et les cadres critiques ? Quels enjeux ces hybridations soulèvent-elles en lien avec la mémoire, l’histoire, le politique, les questions d’identité ou de communauté ?
Les propositions pourront notamment porter sur les axes suivants (liste non exhaustive) :

-écriture lyrique et nature writing
-réévaluations théoriques et conceptuelles des catégories génériques et formelles
-approches pédagogiques des articulations entre lyrique et narratif
-traduction, circulation et réception des formes hybrides
-démarches de recherche-création et explorations fondées sur la pratique
Fidèle à l’engagement de l’INSL en faveur d’un dialogue entre théorie et pratique, le colloque accueillera une diversité de formats, critiques et créatifs, aux côtés des communications académiques traditionnelles. Les propositions pourront ainsi prendre la forme de communications individuelles, panels, tables rondes, ateliers, conférences-performances, ou d’autres formats expérimentaux ou collaboratifs en lien avec la thématique du colloque.
Si les pratiques contemporaines occupent une place importante dans les débats actuels, le colloque souhaite également encourager des contributions portant sur des perspectives historiques plus larges. Les propositions consacrées aux traditions précontemporaines, de la lyrique médiévale et de la première modernité jusqu’à la poésie du XIXᵉ siècle, sont donc particulièrement bienvenues.

Das International Network for the Study of Lyric (INSL) fördert seit seiner Gründung den kritischen Austausch zur Lyrik und eröffnet neue Perspektiven, indem es unterschiedliche lyriktheoretische Zugänge, Textkorpora und lyrische Praktiken zusammenbringt.
Die bisherigen Tagungen widmeten sich den disziplinären Verortungen der Lyrik, ihren Formen des Dazwischen-Seins, ihren Erfahrungs- und Aufmerksamkeitsweisen, dem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Kritik und künstlerischer Praxis sowie der Verankerung von Lyrik in Gegenwart und Vergangenheit (Boston 2017; Lausanne 2019; Leuven 2021; Oslo 2023; Montréal 2025). Daran anknüpfend richtet die sechste INSL-Tagung den Blick auf eine zentrale Frage der Lyriktheorie, die gegenwärtig neue Aktualität gewinnt: das Verhältnis von Lyrik und Erzählen.
Traditionell über Kürze, Intensität, Sprecherinstanz und unmittelbares Erleben bestimmt, wurde die Lyrik häufig der erzählenden Literatur gegenübergestellt, die ihrerseits als sich in der Zeit entfaltend, handlungszentriert und auf Verknüpfung hin angelegt verstanden wird.
Diese klare Gegensätzlichkeit ist jedoch immer wieder unterlaufen worden – durch hybride Formen wie den Versroman, das Prosagedicht, autobiografische und dokumentarische Dichtung, durch Spoken Word Poetry, das Lied und theatralische Darstellungsformen, aber auch durch nicht-westliche Traditionen und zeitgenössische digitale Praktiken.
Umgekehrt ist das Erzählen selbst vielfach von lyrischen Verfahren durchwirkt: Verdichtung, Wiederholung, affektive Adressierung, Rhythmus und bildhafte Sprache.
Die Tagung lädt dazu ein, das Zusammenspiel von Lyrik und Erzählen in seinen formalen, sprachlichen, historischen und kulturellen Ausprägungen zu erkunden. Wie durchdringen, überlagern oder transformieren sich lyrische und narrative Verfahren? Was geschieht mit Stimme, Subjektivität, Zeitlichkeit und Adressierung, wenn Lyrik erzählerische Strukturen aufnimmt oder wenn Erzählen sich lyrisch auflädt? Wie verschieben solche Grenzüberschreitungen unser Verständnis von Gattung, Lektürepraktiken und literaturwissenschaftlichen Kategorien? Und was steht bei solchen Hybridisierungen auf dem Spiel, wenn es um Erinnerung, Geschichte, Politik, Identität und Gesellschaft geht?
Wir freuen uns über Vorschläge, die sich unter anderem mit den folgenden Themen befassen; weitere Zugänge sind ausdrücklich willkommen:
– Lyrisches Erzählen, erzählende Lyrik und hybride Gattungen (Versromane, Prosagedichte, …)
– Temporalität, Ereignishaftigkeit und Plot in lyrischen Formen
– Stimme, „lyrisches Ich“ und narrative Verfahren in der Lyrik
– Lyrik, Narrativ und Subjektivität (Autobiographie, Autofiktion, Zeugenschaft)
– Lyrik und Narration in inter- und multimodalen Zusammenhängen (z.B. Song-Lyrik, Lyrik-Performance, Film, soziale Medien)
– Transkulturelle und translinguale Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis von Lyrik und Erzählen
– Historische Perspektiven auf die Abgrenzung zwischen Lyrik und Erzählen
– Lyrik, Narrative und Politik (kollektive Geschichtsschreibung, Gegennarrative, minoritäre und marginalisierte Stimmen)
– Lyrik und Nature Writing
– Theoretische und konzeptionelle Neubewertungen von Gattung und Form
– Didaktische Ansätze zu den Schnittstellen von Lyrik und Erzählen
– Übersetzung, Verbreitung und Rezeption hybrider Formen
– künstlerische und praxisorientierte Forschung
Im Sinne des INSL-Engagements für den Dialog zwischen Theorie und Praxis bietet die Konferenz neben klassischen Vorträgen eine Vielfalt kreativer und kritischer Formate. Wir laden daher herzlich zur Einreichung von Vorschlägen für Einzelvorträge, Podiumsdiskussionen, Round-Table-Gespräche, Workshops, Performances sowie weitere experimentelle oder kollaborative Formate ein, die sich dem Konferenzthema widmen.
Da die gegenwärtige Debatte vorwiegend von Formen und Praktiken der Gegenwartslyrik geprägt ist, möchten die Organisator:innen die Teilnehmenden ausdrücklich dazu ermutigen, lyrisch-narrative Beziehungen auch in längeren historischen Bögen zu denken. Besonders willkommen sind daher Beiträge, die das Thema in historischer Perspektive beleuchten – von der mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Dichtung bis zur Lyrik des 19. Jahrhunderts.
