The Carmen Conference: An international conference dealing with Carmen in the cinema

To be held 25-27 March 2002 at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Keynote speakers:

Peter Evans, Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London

Susan McClary, University of California at Los Angeles

The Centre for Research into Film and Media at Newcastle University has undertaken a project to study the cinema Carmen. So far we have discovered over 70 films inspired by Merimee's novella and Bizet's opera of Carmen, and have accumulated an extensive archive of articles, reviews and news items on Carmen films as well as material on actresses and singers who played Carmen in these films. Work is already in progress on a monograph and database/bibliography on the Carmen theme.

We invite all who are interested to join us in discussing this significant film theme at our conference. We would welcome proposals from scholars of all disciplines who would like to contribute a paper at the conference.

Papers should last no longer than 20 minutes, and may deal with any aspect related to Carmen on film, although preference will be given to those papers that deal with specific films. We may be able to assist with research on proposed papers through our Carmen archive. Those who are interested in giving a paper at the conference should send a 100-word abstract of the paper to:
