The primary aim of this conference is to explore the fast changing, protean relationship between culture and politics in contemporary Europe, and it is expected to bring together scholars from a variety of academic disciplines and/or research areas, such as Language/European Studies, Cultural Studies, Cultural and/or Political History, Media Studies and Politics.

Suggested areas of investigation:
- Representations of political ideologies in various media and/or forms of cultural expression (e.g. literature, cinema, music, visual arts);
- Cultural policies of governments or political parties and their effects on the production, consumption and regulation of culture;
- Theoretical and/or critical approaches to the interface between politics and culture.

Guest speakers: Martyn Cornick (Birmingham), David Looseley (Leeds), Moray McGowan (Trinity College, Dublin), Hugh O'Donnell (Glasgow Caledonian).

Contributions are invited from academics and postgraduate students working in any of the above areas. It is expected that papers will be of a duration of 30 minutes (max.), to be followed by 10 minutes discussion.

Proposals in the form of a 400-word abstract should be sent to Cyrille Guiat or Chris Tinker before 15 July 2001.

The conference is organised by the European Area Studies sub-group of the CTISS (Centre for Translating and Interpreting Studies in Scotland) which co-ordinates research activities within the School of Languages at Heriot-Watt University. The full conference fee will be £120, inclusive of two nights B&B on Riccarton Campus, or £40 (non-residential).
