The Departments of Germanic and Slavic Studies, and French and Italian, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in European Media Studies (French/German) beginning July 1, 2017. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in German and/or French Media Studies, German and/or French Literature or Philosophy, or a related field by the starting date. They should have native or near-native fluency in French, German and English; or in German and English, or French and English, with additional qualifications in respectively French or German. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching focus on aspects of German and/or French Media Studies, with a strong background in the literature, philosophy, and culture of at least one of these traditions. The successful candidate will bring a comparative perspective to bear on the long history of media, which may include manuscripts, print media, sound recording, film, radio, TV, and digital technologies. Additional specializations in a cognate field (e.g. philosophy, aesthetics, visual culture, science and technology, translation studies, cultural studies) are welcome although not required.

The successful candidate will ideally teach Media Studies in both the German and French programs, as well as in the Comparative Literature program, including large humanities courses on European literary culture, smaller courses for the German and French Majors, and graduate seminars. However, consideration will be given to strong applicants whose fields of specialization include only German or French media studies. The ability to conduct courses at all levels in German and/or French and English is required. The candidate should be able to contribute to existing initiatives such as the Graduate Center for Literary Research, the German and French tracks in Comparative Literature, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center.
