Ce colloque a pour but de réfléchir sur unevariété de discours sur la migration existentielle, sociale, nationale, etleurs rapports à la pluralité culturelle.
Phénomène complexe et problématique actuelle,l'immigration est souvent perçue sous l'angle d'acquisition matérielle, et doncde l'économie et de l'amélioration de la vie. Elle est aussi accompagnée d'unchapelet de considérations politiques, sociales, professionnelles. Rarement lesvaleurs culturelles, la vision du monde n'entrent en ligne de compte pourémigrer d'un pays afin de s'installer dans un autre. Autrement dit, la culture,dans son sens le plus large, est souvent occultée, aussi bien chez l'immigréque dans le pays d'accueil. Or, tout émigré apporte avec lui – qu'il le veuilleou non – son bagage d'héritage culturel.
En fait, l'immigration assume diverses formesselon différents continents. Elle ne s'effectue pas de la même façon en Europequ'en Amérique du Nord, et plus particulièrement au Canada. Le processusémigration/ immigration varie dans les pays hôtes qui reçoivent, et les pays duflux migratoire.
Il s'agitdonc dans ce colloque d'étudier la pluri-culture, ou ce qu'on appelleaujourd'hui la « diversité culturelle » dans toutes sesmanifestations gravitant autour des thèmes migratoires. L'objectif est demettre en lumière cette pluralité dans des textes de création (romans, poèmes,drames, essais, revues, journaux, journaux intimes, biographies, autobiographies,correspondance). Les textes étudiés peuvent inclure les productions desimmigrés ainsi que des réflexions sur l'immigration. L'essentiel, c'est qu'ilstraitent de l'interaction de la culture de l'immigré(e) et de celle du pays hôte. Et par« culture, » on entend à la fois la culture dite « haute, »et l'expression populaire. Nousvoulons souligner en premier lieu l'immigration dans le contexte canadien, etinviter aussi des communications portant sur un contexte comparatif(l'immigration en l'Europe, aux États-Unis), ainsi que sur le cadre historique(le colonialisme, les flux divers d'immigration du XIXe jusqu'auXXIe siècles).
L'objectif est d'analyser la façon dont cettevariéte culturelle pouvait, peut, pourrait atténuer – pour ne pas dire éliminer– « les chocs civilisationnels. » En ce faisant, le dialogue descultures serait un facteur primordial dans la construction de l'identité, lacompréhension de Soi et de l'Autre, le pont entre la mêmeté et la différence.
Nous avons opté pour une approcheinterdisciplinaire aux textes choisis. Nous voudrions éclaircir l'écrituremigratoire selon l'angle existentiel, social, historique, psychologique,philosophique… Les regards croisés sur les apports entre écriture migratoire et pluralité culturelle pourraient nous aider à comprendre jusqu'à quel pointl'immigré(e) est capable d'adapter ses propres valeurs intrinsèques pour mieuxadopter celles où il compte entamer une nouvelle vie à l'étranger. Réciprocitéteintée de tolérance pour amoindrir les chocs, les méfaits, les frictions entrela culture originelle acquise, et la culture nouvelle à acquérir.

Thegoal of the Conference is to reflect on a variety of discourses which addressmigration – national, social, or existential -- and the relationship of thosediscourses to cultural pluralism.
Contemporarymigration is a complex and problematic phenomenon. It is most often viewed fromthe perspective of material gain – “economic” migration aimed at improving amigrant's standard of living. However, it is also accompanied by a network ofpolitical, social, philosophical, and ethical considerations. Rarely does themigrant take his/ her cultural values and world view into account in emigratingfrom one country to establish himself/ herself in another, nor does the hostcountry. In other words, culture in its broadest sense is often overlooked. Yeteach immigrant carries within himself/ herself – consciously or not – the baggage of his/ her culturalheritage.
Infact, immigration assumes different forms on different continents. It is notapproached in the same way in Europe as in North America, and particularly inCanada. Moreover, the process of emigration/ immigration varies according tothe host country which receives immigrants, and their country of origin.
In thisConference we will analyze Pluri-culture, or what is known today as “CulturalDiversity” in all its manifestations which relate to the thematic of migration.The objective is to highlight this pluralism in creative texts (novels, poems,plays, essays, journals and magazines, newspapers, diaries, biographies,autobiographies, correspondence). The texts studied can include the productionsof immigrant writers, as well as reflections on immigration. The essence isthat they all treat the interaction of the immigrant's original culture andthat of the host country. And we understand “culture” to mean both so-called“high” culture and popular expression. We would like to underline in the firstinstance immigration in the Canadian context, and also invite papers dealingwith the comparative context (immigration in Europe, in the United States), aswell as the historical framework (colonialism and its aftermath, the diversewaves of immigration from the 19th to the 21st centuries).
Thepurpose is to study the ways in which this cultural diversity could, can,should lessen – perhaps eliminate – the “shocks of civilizations.” Inaccomplishing this aim, the dialogue of cultures would be a primordial factorin the construction of identity, the understanding of the Self and the Other,the bridge between similarity and difference.
We havetherefore opted for an interdisciplinary approach to the chosen texts. We wouldlike to illuminate migrant writing from such perspectives as the existential,social, historical, psychological, philosophic…. The multiplicity of viewpointson the relations between migrant writings and cultural pluralism should help usunderstand to what degree the immigrant is able to adapt his/ her intrinsicvalues in order to better adopt those he/ she finds in a strange land where he/she hopes to begin a new life. Both the newcomer and those long settled shouldfind a reciprocity imbued with tolerance which can lessen the shocks,hardships, frictions between the original culture acquired, and the new cultureto be acquired.
Proposals for papers will be accepted inFrench or in English.
Length of papers: 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes fordiscussion.
