A detailed study of the influence of Diderot's drama theory on the dramatic practice of Lessing, bringing to light the role of the contemporary discourse on painting in shaping the new theatre aesthetic of the period. The impact of a painterly definition of illusion on various aspects of theatrical representation is examined, with particular emphasis on its implications for the creation of dramatic speech.
Romira Worvill holds degrees in Modern Languages and Comparative Literature from the Universities of Bristol and Oxford and is now an Associate Professor of French in the Department of Languages and Literatures at Acadia University, in Nova Scotia, Canada. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approaches to literature.
