Call for papers on 'Jewishness and Englishness in 19th and 20th Century English Literature'. A special panel at the Central New York Conference on Language and Literature.
October 27-29, 2002
This panel seeks papers exploring works of 19Th and 20th Century English Literature that juxtapose the 'English' with the 'Jewish'. Particularly encouraged are papers dealing with works that use representations of Jewish characters/traits/religious beliefs as a way to comment upon or construct the constitutive elements of English identity. In what way do these commentaries critique Englishness? In what ways do they reinforce it?
Potential topics include but are certainly not limited to:
Englishness, Jewishness and the Arts in literature
Englishness, Jewishness and Race in literature
Narrative Strategies for Representing Jewishness and Englishness
Conversion from Jewishness to Englishness (or vice versa)
