Call for Papers:

France and the Memory of the Great War: An Interdisciplinary Conference

March 2 and 3, 2017

University of South Alabama — Mobile, Alabama

Keynote address: “France and the Great War: A Century of Mourning and Bereavement,” Annette Becker, Professor of Contemporary History, Université Paris ouest Nanterre la Défense.

This conference proposes to explore not only the French memory of the Great War but also the many ways in which France itself has served as the literal and figurative site of commemoration for other combatants of the Western Front. We are seeking a broad range of papers from scholars in all disciplines working on the memory of the Great War.

Themes to be explored might include, but are certainly not limited to:

  • French literature and art about the memory of the Great War
  • British and American war memorials in France
  • France in wartime and postwar American, British, German or Italian art and literature
  • Postwar masculinities in Jazz Age Paris
  • France as partner or subject matter in European and/or transatlantic commemorative projects in the postwar decades
  • France as partner or subject matter in contemporary European and/or transatlantic centennial commemorative projects and partnerships
  • Commemorating the contributions of American and British service women in France

Submit proposals in English of no more than 500 words outlining your 20-minute presentation by September 6, 2016 to warandmemoryconference@southalabama.edu. Kindly include your institutional affiliation and contact information.
