PHD IN FRANCO-GERMAN RELATIONS

Sixty years after the Élysée Treaty and many more of highly productive Franco-German cultural relations despite a history of wars and nationalist ideologies, we are in a position – thanks to the support of MIC and the embassies of Germany and France in Ireland – to offer a PhD position on a relevant topic in Limerick.

Are you interested in doing your PhD in the context of cultural (socio-political/historical) relations between France and Germany under interdisciplinary supervision?

We offer a postgraduate assistantship stipend (approx. €6,900 p.a.), a fee waiver, and an annual travel / research scholarship funded by the French and German Embassies in Ireland (€600 p.a.).

If awarded an assistantship, you will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience at MIC (this may involve teaching German and/or French language classes and/or tutorials; max. 6 hours/week) and work in a friendly, dynamic team of academics. You will be offered intensive, individual, and interdisciplinary supervision. The stipend, tuition waiver and travel/research scholarship will normally be offered for a period of three years. There will be a tuition waiver (and no teaching obligations) in year 4 to enable timely completion of the PhD thesis.

You should have a master’s degree (or comparable degree) in French Studies, German Studies or another relevant discipline, and a very good command of English. You should enjoy research and academic work, innovative and creative teaching opportunities, and teamwork.

For further information (and an informal discussion about your potential PhD project), please contact the Head of German Studies, Dr. Christiane Schönfeld (christiane.schonfeld@mic.ul.ie) and/or the Head of French Studies, Dr. Loïc Guyon (loic.guyon@mic.ul.ie).

Please send your application (including CV, copies of your transcripts, and a project description) to both Loïc Guyon and Christiane Schönfeld by 1 November 2023.

Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the quality of the project description; teaching experience, communication skills and team compatibility will be taken into account in cases of equal suitability. Successful candidates will be notified in November and asked to submit an official application in English. This will be prepared in collaboration with respective supervisors and must include the following:

Application Form (signed by Student, Supervisor and Head of Department), Thesis Proposal (max. 4,000 words, incl. bibliography), two Academic Letters of Reference, Transcripts, Bank Giro for Application Fee. For further information please see: https://www.mic.ul.ie/study-at-mic/postgraduates.

The successful candidate will be expected to start in January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
