New York (Fordham University at Lincoln Center).

Cultural Relations between the Francophone World and the United States"

The Commemoration of the Centennial of the SPFFA, which will take place on October 8 and 9, 2004, will have a dual purpose: the celebration of the Centennial itself as well as the celebration of the cultural relations between the Francophone world and the United States.

Since the Seventh International Colloquium ["Creation and Reality in the French Idiom and the Cultural Relations between the Francophone World and the United States,"] is an essential aspect of this important event, the SPFFA [Société des Professeurs Français et Francophones] invites professors and other scholars to submit by April 15, 2004 proposals for papers to be presented at this [Seventh International] colloquium, which will be held [on October 8 and 9] at Fordham University, Lincoln Center Campus.

The following sessions are already planned, and others may be added:

I. Cultural relations between the Francophone world and the Americas 2 or more sessions). There has always existed a cultural intimacy between the United States and the Francophone world. From the time of Christopher Columbus' landing in the New World, to the American Revolution, through two World Wars and beyond to the present, the Franco-American relationship has continued to grow in spite of perceived differences and misunderstandings. In order to explore the depths of this relationship, the colloquium will focus in detail upon such subjects as:
· Travel literature

· Art exhibitions and the rise of the modern museum
· Popular music and the exportation/exploitation of culture
· The exportation/importation of beauty
· Foreign Legions: Soldiers serving abroad
· Transatlantic Democracies
· Francophone and American Multicuturalism
· How differently do we confront xenophobia and racism?
II. New European perspectives as the European Union grows to 25 nations
III. Francophone writings, 3 sessions, concentrating upon the following possible themes:
· The Bicentennial of Haiti's Independence
· The place of the common people in Francophone cultures
· Marginalized Francophone voices
· Quebec seen from France and from the US
· The idea of a Francophone "Canon?"
· Contemporary humor in Francophone cinema
IV. Writing the Feminine
V. Teaching and Technology
· Practical uses of technology in the classroom, the lab and at home
· Is technology responding to our needs?
VI. Language and Polysemy
VII. French through the Centuries
VIII. Topics in French literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries

Papers may be presented either in French or in English. They should be planned to fit into one of the topics listed above, or others as they are established. The number of participants in each session may be limited.

Those interested in participating should submit, by April 15, 2004, the title of their paper, the session in which they would like to participate, and a one-page resume double spaced (12 point) of the proposed paper. These items, accompanied by a mailing address, a telephone no., and an e-mail address, should be sent to:
