"French Travel Writing from the Americas, 1500-1800"
NEH Summer Institute for College and University Teachers
The Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies
July 14 - August 15, 2003

This five-week institute for college and university teachers will offer an introduction to French travel writing from colonial Brazil, Florida, Canada, Louisiana, and the Caribbean. Each session will focus on a particular writer, and we will proceed chronologically to trace literary borrowings and to follow the progress of the French encounter with the Americas. Teachers from all disciplines in the humanities are welcome. The institute will be conducted in English, and all of the readings are available in English translation. In addition to reading travel accounts and related secondary texts, participants will be encouraged to undertake research or curriculum projects, drawing on the Newberry Library's world-renowned collections of colonial manuscript and print materials.

Visiting faculty: James R. Akerman (Newberry Library Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography), David Buisseret (The University of Texas at Arlington), Joan Dayan (The University of Pennsylvania), Daniel K. Richter (The University of Pennsylvania), Gordon M. Sayre (The University of Oregon), Laurier G. Turgeon (Laval University), Janet Whatley (The University of Vermont)

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 3, 2003.

Project director: Carla Zecher (Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies)

Supported by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
