Politique et religion au XVIIe siècle : note sur le passage par l’exemplaire

2La question de l'exemplarité est posée dans cette communication sur le terrain où se croisent religion et politique dans la première moitié du XVIIème. Trois niveaux d'exemplarité y sont déployés : celui des exemples que produit narrativement l'historien pour atteindre des cas singuliers saisis en action, celui des processus d'exemplarisation qu'il rencontre dans les sources narratives qu'il mobilise et qu'il doit contextualiser, celui enfin de l'exemplarité comme processus cognitif où la politique et la théologie continuent au XVIIème siècle de tenir l'une à l'autre. Dans une première partie l'analyse s'appuie sur des apports récents de l'historiographie à propos des rapports entre ontologies catholiques concurrentes, théologie et politique. Dans une deuxième partie est examinée à partir du Prince de G. De Balzac la figure du roi comme reflet d'un «exemplaire» divin et source d'exemplarité au cœur du système de domination socio-politique.

4In this paper, the question of exemplarity is posed on a ground where religion and politics are crossing during the first half of the seventeenth century. Three levels of exemplarity are unfurled : that of the examples produced as a narration by the historian in order to attain singular cases seized in action, the level of the exemplarity processes that he encounters in the narrative sources he mobilizes and which he has to put in context, and the level of the exemplarity as a cognitive process, where politics and theology go on being mixed up during the seventeenth century. In the first part of the paper, the analysis is based on recent contributions of historiography related to the relations between competitive catholic ontologies, between theology and politics. In the second part, we examine throughout the texts of Prince de G. de Balzac the figure of the King as a reflection of an “exemplary” divine concept and as a source of exemplarity laying at the heart of the socio-political system of domination.
