The Department of French and Francophone Studies at Brown University seeks to hire
a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2022, to teach a broad
range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
We seek candidates with scholarly expertise in Francophone literature from one or
more of the following regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, the Maghreb,
Canada, the Indian Ocean. The ideal candidate will show evidence of thoughtful
intellectual engagement with the broader conceptual fields of critical race studies
and/or postcolonial theory. Candidates holding a secondary specialization in
contemporary politics and society (including migration studies), film, gender studies
or the environmental humanities are especially encouraged to apply.
Brown’s Department of French and Francophone Studies offers a rich and diverse
undergraduate curriculum, ranging from beginner’s French to advanced courses in
literature, culture and critical theory; a small but robust undergraduate concentration
(major); and a nationally competitive PhD program. The successful candidate will
teach one language course (coordinating a multi-section course where required) and
two literature/culture courses at the undergraduate or graduate levels per year. In
addition to contributing substantively to the curriculum, undergraduate and graduate-
level advising and other faculty roles within the Department of French and
Francophone Studies, the ideal candidate would participate actively in the
intellectual life of the University through collaborations with such centers as the
Cogut Institute for the Humanities, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice,
the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, the Center for Latin
American and Caribbean Studies, and the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research
on Women.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent degree) in French Language and
Literature or in Comparative Literature (with a specialization in French/Francophone
Studies), in hand by August 2022; a strong and innovative research agenda;
demonstrated excellence in teaching; sound training in and/or a real interest in
language pedagogy; and native or near native proficiency in French and English.
The Department of French and Francophone Studies values diversity and inclusion as
essential to achieving excellence, and especially encourages applications from those
belonging to groups historically underrepresented in French literature departments.
Criteria for this search will include past and potential future contributions to
diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, advising and scholarship.
