RÉSUMÉ

In Poetry and Apocalypse, Franke seeks to find the premises fordialogue between cultures, especially religiousfundamentalisms—including Islamic fundamentalism—and modern Westernsecularism. He argues that in order to be genuinely open, dialogueneeds to accept possibilities such as religious apocalypse in ways thatcan be best understood through the experience of poetry. Franke readsChristian epic and prophetic tradition as a secularization of religiousrevelation that preserves an understanding of the essentiallyapocalyptic character of truth and its disclosure in history. Theusually neglected negative theology that undergirds this apocalyptictradition provides the key to a radically new view of apocalypse as atonce religious and poetic.
