« Visible et invisible : lutte de femmes »

Edited Collection

We invite scholars to submit abstracts of articles for publication on the topic of women's visibility and women's bodily representation in French and Francophone Literature and History.

This collection, “Visible et invisible: lutte de femmes,” seeks to tie a historical consideration of visibility in terms of race and gender to contemporary representations of this theme in literary texts. How is the notion of visibility tied to questions of race, gender, and class both in France and in the Francophone world? Why are certain female bodies visible at certain historical moments? How are the conceptions of colonial blackness, the body, the other, and sexuality present in France during the first part of the century transformed in a post-colonial literary context? We seek to understand both the colonial legacy and post-colonial representation of race and gender in France and in a Francophone context in terms of the visibility of the female body. A consideration of visibility in physical and intellectual terms will incorporate historical and literary analysis to understand the complex and multiple mappings of race, gender, sexuality, and class on the female body.

We welcome articles that examine the following topics:

- Visibility, race, gender, and class

- Colonial legacy and post-colonial representation of race, gender, the body, the other, and sexuality

- Invisibility, tradition, oppression, and space

- Gaze, voyeurism, and the Other

- Exposure and withholding of contemporary white middle-class sexuality and the body

- Psyche and the body

Please send abstracts (400-500 words) and inquiries to the co-editors. They should include a selected bibliography as well as a short biography of the contributor. Please note that the edition will be in English, although we will accept abstracts in French during the selection process.
