THINKING LITERATURE IN THE 21st CENTURY - International Conference on Literary Studies

The conference will be held at the Faculty of Philosophy, Catholic University of Portugal,

in Braga (Northern Portugal), from Sept. 30th to Oct. 1st, 2010.

Presentation

After varied and considerable theoretical and critical evolutions, the current literary studies are once again in question, facing several challenges and dilemmas. In a time of fast transformations and in the wider setting of enquiring the "new humanities", the field of Literary Studies is frontally questioned, internally and externally, about new orientations – aesthetic, cultural, social and others: What is the purpose of literature? What new critical methods for the study of literature? What literature is to be lectured? What is the place of literature in teaching? How to teach literature? What are the links between literature, the other arts, the mass media and the new digital communication?

In the beginning of the XXI century, and with the intention of both a critical balance and a prospective look, this International Conference aims at contributing to an up to date discussion about some central areas of the Literary Studies, having selected for this purpose some thematic areas: literary theorization and comparatism – paths of renovation; discussion about the literary canon, an open debate; literary history and didactics – new orientations; contemporary literature: new cartographies and tendencies; arts, mass media and digital communication.
