The tragedy, the tragic and the political

The main object of study of this congress is the tragedy with respect to its content and its form, its history as a genre and as a locus of contestation and political and philosophical reflection. The Attic tragedy, the point of departure of the European and Western theatre tradition, functions as a starting point for an intra- and extrasystemic analysis of all kinds of theatrical forms, experiments, canons and comments which relate to that history in one way or another. The outset of this project is both historical and diachronic (from the Attic tragedy through the Elizabethan play to contemporary interpretations by Pasolini) as well as synchronous and interdisciplinary (the tragic as an analytical paradigm, as a lever for ideological critique in the discourse on human cruelty). Through many ages both tragedy and Trauerspiel the serious expressions of theatricality have had a major influence on the evolution of political society and on the place of the individual, of the political subject within this society. Exactly these mechanisms of interference between the tragedy, the political subject and their representation are at the very heart of this research project.
