The Memories of Cities : The Engraving of History in Urban Spaces from Romanticism to nowadays

University of Saint-Etienne, France
Comparative Studies Center
2-4 May 2002

We invite proposals for 20-minute papers on the following topic. By engraving, we mean all signs bequeathed by history : visible traces, monuments, architecture, ruins of any kind but also onomastics (streets or square names, underground stations, SPQR and all kinds of acronyms). This heritage tells us about the past, it makes up a urban memory, historical records for the one trying to decipher the various signs displayed before him - either he is a stroller, a tourist, an historian or an artist taking the city as the setting or the main character of his work. We intend to study artistic representation of the city at the crossroads of history and geography, as a chronotope turning it into a high place of historical memory.
This conference includes literature (novel, poetry, travel writing, essay), visual arts (painting, cinema, photography) as well as architecture (with the basic question of restoration), city planning and, why not, tourism. Diverse approaches (national, transcultural or comparative studies) focusing on the 19th and the 20th century are encouraged. French and English-language representations of native or foreign cities are equally welcomed.
Proposals in English or French should reach the conference co-ordinator by 15 september 2001. The paper proposal must include an abstract, specifying the works and authors used.
Selected conference papers will be published by St-Etienne University Press.
