The Centre for Canadian Culture at the University of Udine is proud to invite you to the international conference The Canadian Cultural Mosaic as Metaphor: Representations and Transformations of Literary, Musical, Visual and Decorative Art Forms in Canada that will take place in Palazzo Antonini, from April 27 to April 29, 2011.
The metaphor of the “cultural mosaic”, which represents the mixture of peoples, languages and cultures coexisting in contemporary Canadian society, can be considered one of the main characteristics of Canadian identity. However the metaphor also presents itself as a resource and footstep for new generations that often refute the idea of a strict multiculturalism – where the patterns of the “mosaic” are cemented by impassable borders – in favour of a more pluralistic and cross-cultural collage, where boundaries are fluid and free.
The scope of the conference is to analyse the productivity of the “mosaic” metaphor in relation to artistic, literary and cultural transformations in Canada. One of our main objectives is also to take a closer look at the artistic contribution of Italian immigrants (in particular those from the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region) in the formation of a Canadian transcultural identity and canon.

Le Centro di Cultura Canadese est heureux de vous inviter au colloque international La mosaïque culturelle canadienne comme métaphore: représentations et transformations des arts littéraires, musicaux, visuels et décoratifs au Canada, qui aura lieu à Udine du 27 au 29 avril 2011.
La métaphore de la « mosaïque culturelle » désigne ce mélange d'ethnies, de langues, de langages et de cultures qui coexistent au sein de la société canadienne. Trait distinctif de l'identité canadienne, comme elle se présente aujourd'hui de manière forte, il s'agit également d'un point de départ fondamental pour la formation des générations futures, car celles-ci sont portées à réfuter l'idée d'un multiculturalisme rigide – où les tesselles de la « mosaïque » sont cimentées par des limites infranchissables –, lui préférant les aspects de « transculture » ou de « pluralisme culturel ».
L'objectif du colloque est d'évaluer la productivité de la métaphore de la « mosaïque » à l'aune des représentations et des transformations artistiques au Canada. Un des aspects les plus importants du projet est également de mettre en lumière la contribution artistique des immigrants italiens, particulièrement ceux de la région du Frioul, en ce qui a trait à la formation d'un canon « transculturel » canadien.
