A travers l'étude de la postérité iconographique et littéraire d'épisodes ou de personnages bibliques, cette séance voudrait interroger le rapport entre l'art et la Bible, le passage du texte sacré aux représentations profanes et l'influence des ces représentations les unes sur les autres en termes d'intermédialité ou d'intertextualité, définie comme le « passage d'un système de signes à un autre », ou « transposition » (Julia Kristeva, La Révolution du langage poétique 1967).
L'influence de la Bible sur l'imaginaire est immense et sa fortune iconographique constitue à son tour une source d'inspiration, doublant le texte biblique ou fonctionnant comme un relais par rapport à lui.
Nous voudrions susciter des réflexions autour de ces questions : Quelle connaissance de la Bible les représentations iconographiques permettent-elles ? Quelle transmission assurent-elles ? Se substituent-elles à sa lecture ? Quelle est la place de la Bible dans les textes littéraires qui s'en inspirent au second degré ? Comment le texte (re)déploie-t-il l'image, concentrant elle-même une narrativité sous-jacente ? Dans quelle mesure le passage d'un support à un autre multiplie-t-il les potentialités de l'imaginaire autour des épisodes bibliques représentés en jouant sur la relation entre image et narration ?
ENGLISH
The purpose of this session is to question the relationship between art and the Bible through literary and iconographic legacy of biblical episodes or characters. We will also discuss the shift from sacred texts to profane representations and the influence of these representations on one another in terms of intermediality and intertextuality, defined as “the shift from one system of signs to another”, or “transposition” (Julia Kristeva, The Revolution of poetic language, 1967).
The influence of the Bible on the imagination is immense and its iconographic wealth makes it in turn a source of inspiration, overtaking the biblical text or acting as an intermediary to it.
We would like to stimulate responses to the following questions: What light can iconographic representations shed on the Bible? To what extent do they ensure the transmission of the original message? Can they act as a substitute for the written text ? What is the role played by the Bible in literary texts which draw inspiration from its iconography? How does the text refer back to the image and the underlying narrative it contains? How does the shift from one medium to another multiply the artist's potential imaginary in relation to the illustrated biblical episodes, exploring the tension between image and text?
