Chers collègues,
Je vous rappelle que le 27e colloque annuel de la société « Nineteenth Century French Studies » (NCFS) aura lieu en octobre de cette année à l'Université du Wisconsin (Madison). Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas ce colloque, ou qui le connaissent mal, je dirai tout simplement que NCFS est le principal colloque des dix-neuviémistes aux Etats-Unis et que cet événement annuel permet un véritable brassage d'idées parmi les chercheurs américains, français, canadiens et autres, et ce dans un cadre chaleureux et amical.
Pour les Européens qui auraient besoin d'un atlas pour situer le Wisconsin (je ne plaisante qu'à demi !), l'état se trouve dans la région des grands lacs, et sa frontière sud-ouest longe le Mississippi. L'Université du Wisconsin héberge l'un des centres les plus importants des études françaises et francophones.
L'appel de communications, en anglais, se trouve plus bas. Les communications elles-mêmes peuvent être en français ou en anglais, et toute proposition de communication doit être soumise avant le 15 mars.

Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium: 18-20 October, 2001 University of Wisconsin, Madison
Twentieth-Century Interpretations of the Nineteenth: Recasting and Rethinking a Century of Criticism and Theory
As electronics, technology, and the Internet thrust us into a new age and new modes of thought, it is appropriate that we pause and reflect upon how theory, criticism, and art from the 20th century have formed current thinking. Our 27th annual colloquium will center on retrospective critiques of the past century and their place in the century that is dawning.
Possible topics:
--20th century writers rethink the 19th: Sartre and Baudelaire, Valéry and Mallarmé, Proust and Balzac, Proust and Sand, etc.
--The 19th century reads the 20th (Hugo, Verne, Mallarmé, et al).
--Canons: from the 19th to the 21st (What ever happened to Eugène Sue?)
--Paris 1800-2000.
--Colonizers: the real thing and criticism as colonizing.
--Rethinking eras: Romanticism, Naturalism, Symbolism.
--History and literary histories.
--Structuralist, post-structuralist, cultural studies, gender studies, cultural studies, and Marxist criticism today. Where do we go from here?
--The book in the age of high capitalism and in the global economy.
--The arts look at the 19th century.
--Special emphasis will be placed on films depicting the 19th-century, with special screenings Thursday and Friday evenings.
It is hoped that papers devoted directly to the main topic will constitute a special volume. While these papers will be the core of the colloquium, submissions not directly related to the topic will be considered.
