The University of Nantes is organizing a conference on the life and works of Peter Abelard, born in the village of Le Pallet, near Nantes. The University invites interested scholars to propose communications for the conference, which will be held in Nantes October 3-4, 2001.

The conference will be organized into four half-day sessions; each session will begin with a plenary address to be followed by three or parallel sessions (with 3 participants each). Each of the two afternoons will also have a fourth session directed to a larger, non-specialized audience.

Cultural and artistic activities are planned in conjunction with the conference.

Nantes is sixth-largest city in France; its University serves 30,000 students. Nantes is on the Loire river, 60 km from the Atlantic coast and 400 km West of Paris. Paris is easily reached by car (4 hours), by high-speed trains (TGV; 2 hours) which leave Paris Montparnasse Station hourly, or by plane from Charles De Gaule or Orly airports (50 minutes). There are also direct flights to Nantes from other European airports, including Lyon Satolas, Madrid Barajas, and London Gatwick.
