Celebrating Bologna? We don't think so.
International call for participation
On March 11 and 12 2010 the education ministers of46 European countries will celebrate the 10-years anniversary of theBologna-process in Vienna and Budapest.
Considering the currentsituation and the ongoing protests in many European Universities thiscelebration is a mockery for all of us.
Not only has the Bologna-process clearly failed toachieve the agreed goals of improved mobility; it also led to morerestrictions for students and their studies and to greater socialselection of access to higher education in general.
The fact that the entire process is based on theunderstanding of education as only producing workforce dictated by themarket is reflected in the agreed goals. Therefore our aim is not onlyto measure success or failure of the Bologna-process but furthermore toquestion the process and its foundations itself. Master and PhD aselite programs, which especially exclude women, introduction of studyfees and under-financing of universities as well as de-democratizationwithin the university system are obvious symptoms.
The difficultfinancial situation increases the corporate influence on education andscientific research. The orientation of teaching towards corporateinterests does not only affect universities, but the entire educationsector in general. Hence the possibilities of self-determined andcritical learning are restricted.
In view of this disastrous situation we don't seeany reason to celebrate the Bologna-process. The European-wide protestsof students, teachers and others show that the economization ofeducation is directed against their interests.
Therefore the week from 8 to 12 March 2010 shallaccompany this conference with demonstrations, strikes and blockades aswell as a counter-conference, where we are going to discuss Europeaneducation policy, as well as the common goals of our protests.
We formed four groups, which focus on different aspects of the event:

Demonstration/blockade
Forthe time the ministers are holding their meeting we are organizing ademonstration (Thursday, march 11). Different ideas of blockades arebeing discussed. -
Strike
Using the occasion of thisevent, we are planning to go on a university-strike in cooperation withthe teaching staff for at least two days. -
Counter-conference
Inthis part of the event, we want to work on, discuss and exchangeexperiences openly about the bologna process and possible bettereducation policies. -
International mobilization
Abig part of this event should also be the gathering of all theprotesters from different countries and fields in order to work on acommon strategy
We want this event to be organized and held by allprotesters together. This is why we are calling for your participationnot only at the event itself, but also during the preparations (eg.:input at the counter-conference, etc.).
Together we will show that we do not agree with thecelebration of a process, that limits education to the production ofhuman capital!

Vom 11. bis 12. März werden dieBildungsminister*innen 46 europäischer Staaten zur10-Jahre-Jubiläumskonferenz des Bologna-Prozesses nach Wien undBudapest geladen. Angesichts der Zustände an den Universitäten und denbreiten Protesten für freie Bildung sind die geplanten Feierlichkeiteneine Verhöhnung der Uni-Angehörigen.
Der Bologna-Prozess hat nicht zu mehrDynamik und Mobilität im europäischen Hochschulraum geführt. ImGegenteil: Die stark verschulten Studienpläne und der Druck, diese inMindeststudienzeit zu absolvieren, erschweren es, Auslandssemester zumachen. Das neue dreistufige Studiensystem führte zu erhöhter sozialerSelektion. Während der Bachelor einer größeren Zahl zugänglich seinsollte, verdünnen sich Master und PhD zu einem Eliteprogramm, das vorallem Frauen ausschließt. Zudem kommt die chronische Unterfinanzierungder Hochschulen, sowie die Einführung von Studiengebühren undvermehrter Demokratieabbau an den Universitäten. Die schwierigefinanzielle Lage zwingt mehr und mehr Hochschulen Konzerne alsInvestoren für Forschung an die Universität zu locken. Unabhängige undfreie Forschung wird dabei unmöglich. Die Ausrichtung der Lehrinhalteauf Arbeitsmarkt-Interessen im Zuge der Lissabonstrategie betrifftnicht nur Universitäten, sondern soll zur Leitlinie des gesamtenBildungswesens werden. Dies schränkt die Möglichkeit ein,selbstbestimmt und kritisch zu lernen.
Angesichts dieser desaströsen Lagesehen wir keinen Grund das 10-jährige Bestehen der Bolognareform zufeiern. Die europaweiten Proteste unter Studierenden, Lehrenden undSchüler*innen zeigen, dass die Politiker*innen nicht mehr über unsereKöpfe entscheiden können. Deshalb wollen wir am 19.01 eineStreikversammlung abhalten.
