La présentation du corps dans la littérature
« Ce que cache mon langage, mon corps le dit. Mon corps est un enfant entêté, mon langage est un adulte très civilisé. »
Cette citation de Roland Barthes dans son essai Fragments d’un discours amoureux (Seuil, 1977) présente la relation indéniable du « corps » et du langage. Dans la littérature moderne, écrire le « corps », c’est scruter les signes tracés par le langage. Cependant, le « corps » paraît être toujours le sujet privilégié de l’imagination dans la littérature. Dès lors, il nous a semblé pertinent d’interroger cette notion féconde dans ce domaine. Nous proposons donc ici une rêverie sur le « corps » et plus précisément sur son rôle imaginaire dans la littérature.
L’ampleur du sujet nous permet de proposer différentes approches :
- La présence du corps en littératures comparées, la traduction et l’interprétation de l’image du « corps » d’une littérature à l’autre, la transformation de l’image du « corps » de la littérature classique à la littérature contemporaine,
- L’image du « corps » dans la littérature de voyage, la présentation du « corps » dans la littérature du Moyen-Orient ou dans la littérature « femme » (Gender Studies), le « corps » comme sujet principal d’une pièce de théâtre,
- La différenciation du « corps » du Moi et du « corps » de l’Autre, la transition du « corps » réel à celui de l’imaginaire,
- Le rapport du « corps » et du langage : une approche linguistique, le « corps » crée-t-il un procédé métaphorique dans la littérature ?
Cette liste n’est certainement pas exhaustive mais déjà, ces approches dessinent une position du « corps » dans la littérature que ce soit en poésie ou en prose. Il s’agit non seulement d’étudier la littérature contemporaine mais également d’interroger la présentation du « corps » dans la littérature précédente. La question en perspective peut être posée dans la littérature de pays différents, du côté de la création comme de la réception du texte, origines d’une image nouvelle autant qu’inattendue du « corps ». La réflexion vise à montrer comment ce sujet, en tant que processus de métabolisation imaginaire, peut avoir une influence sur les textes littéraires. En effet, au-delà des différentes figurations littéraires possibles, la présentation du « corps » agit simultanément dans la littérature et dans l’espace des sciences humaines comme un opérateur d’une imagination collective.

Modalités d’inscription :
Cette journée d’étude est ouverte à tous, doctorants et jeunes chercheurs en particulier, que ce soit en littérature française, en littérature étrangère, en langues anciennes ou en linguistique. Les articles peuvent être rédigés en français ou en anglais. Les propositions devront contenir 300-500 mots et être accompagnées d’une bibliographie et d’une courte biographie permettant de retracer le parcours de l’intervenant lors de sa présentation. Les propositions devront être envoyées d’ici le 30 mars 2014 à l’une des adresses suivantes :

The representation of the body in literature
“What is hidden by my language is expressed by my body. My body is a stubborn child and my language is a very civilized adult.”
This quote by Roland Barthes from his collection of essays A Lover's Discourse: Fragments (Hill and Wang, 2010) presents us with the undeniable relationship between the body and language. Indeed, the body has always been the subject of literary imagination and it seems appropriate, as it has been the case for numerous studies, to explore this fruitful concept in the field of literature. Therefore, we propose a musing on the body with an emphasis on its imaginary role in literature. The magnitude of corporeal (re)presentations in literature will hopefully bring about stimulating and interdisciplinary discussions on the subject.
We especially welcome abstracts that examine issues surrounding the following themes:
- The representation of the body in comparative literature
- The image of the body in travel literature: the representation of the body in Middle Eastern literature
- How can one differentiate between one’s own body and that of the other?
- The transformation of the corporeal image from classic to contemporary literature
- The transition of the “real” body to the imaginary body
- The representation of the body in women’s literature: classic as well as contemporary
- The translation and/or the interpretation of the body from one literature to another
- The body and theatre
- Does the body create a metaphorical process in literature?
- The relation between body and language: a linguistic approach
As these approaches are neither limited to genre nor period, abstracts dealing with different literary genres and epochs will also be welcomed. Moreover, these questions can be situated in cross-cultural perspectives which can produce new images/representations of the body. This literary exchange can also be seen as an attempt to show how the body, as a process of imaginary and/or linguistic metabolism, may have an influence on (the study of) literary texts.
