Appel à communications

Catastrophes historiques et écologiques, industrialisation du vivant, épizooties, vogue de l'animal familier, découvertes biologiques et éthologiques dessinent une cartographie inédite des rapports entre hommes et bêtes. La reconfiguration voire la remise en cause des frontières entre humanité et animalité sont au coeur des débats philosophiques, scientifiques, sociaux ou éthiques. En prise sur ce concert intellectuel, la création littéraire et artistique contemporaine multiplie les regards, reformule le face à face entre l'animal et l'humain. Les bêtes, êtres de fuite, réputées mutiques, de même que l'animalité native du rapport humain au monde, constituent une gageure pour le langage et la création. Certains procédés littéraires permettent-ils de restituer les mondes et les langages animaux ? Comment rendre compte de l'animalisation politique d'un groupe ou des individus ? Quelles approches du vivant depuis le début du vingtième siècle peuvent être repérées aujourd'hui ? Autant de questions qui inspirent et nourrissent toute réflexion sur les rapports entre humanité et animalité.

D'autres thématiques de même que les approches comparatives et interdisciplinaires seront prises en considération.


Les propositions de sessions complètes et de communications individuelles, en français ou en anglais, doivent être soumises à human-animal@usfca.edu avant le 31 août 2010. Pour chaque communication, merci de joindre un résumé de 150 à 200 mots, ainsi que les coordonnées de l'auteur/e.


Call for Papers

Historical and ecological catastrophes, industrialization of the living, epizooties, trendy pet adoptions, biological and ethological discoveries converge to draw an uncanny cartography of the relations between humans and animals. This remapping of the divide between humanity and animality is central to today's philosophical, scientific, social and ethical debates. In concert with such intellectual manifestations, contemporary literary and artistic creation is multiplying the kinds of gazes leveled on this relationship reformulating the oppositional stance between animals and humans. Animals, defined by their tendency to flee, and reputedly mute, along with the native animality of humans in relation to the world, are all a challenge for language and creativity. Can literary procedures restitute animal worlds and languages? How is the animalization of a political group or an individual to be reported? What approaches to life from the beginning of the 20th Century are still noticeable today? These are few of the many questions which inspire and nurture all reflections about the relation between humanity and animality.

Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Other related topics will be considered.


Proposals for complete panels and individual papers, in French or English, must be submitted to human-animal@usfca.edu before August 31, 2010. Please include a 150-200 word abstract for each paper, as well as the author's contact information.
