French Prison Literature (1901 to present)

For the 2003 Twentieth-Century French Studies Colloquium.

27-30 March 2003 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.



This panel will focus on literary representations of the prison and carceral life as well as pertinent sociological theory and studies. While papers should focus on the French context, comparative papers are also welcome.



Some possible topics may include:

Prison in the novel
Prison films
Sociological studies of incarceration and prison life
Penological studies
Documentary representations of the prison (in fiction, autobiography,
print journalism, and telejournalism)
The Vasseur crisis and its aftermath
Prison conditions
Prison reform
The carceral universe vs. the concentrationary universe.
Political prisoners in twentieth-century France
Penal colonies
