France's Colonies and the Second World War

The Second World War had a dramatic impact on colonial societies and on the debates surrounding colonial policy, leading both to the creation of the Départements d'Outre-Mer and to the beginnings of independence movements. Representations of wartime experiences figure prominently in the work of writers and film-makers such as Sembene and Glissant. Bringing together political, cultural and literary topics, this issue will explore the diverse and complex effects of the war on France's colonies. Articles in English or French.
