Dragons are a universal phenomenon and have fascinated humans since thedawn of time. Yet whereas we have numerous studies into the origins ofthese fantastic creatures, there have been very few attempts atdiscussing their appearance, function and development within literarytexts. The eighteen essays collected in this volume (8 in French, 6 inGerman and 4 in English) - written by an international cast of scholars- try to fill this gap by looking at dragons in literature East andWest, contemporary and past.

Fanfan Chen is Professor of European and Comparative Literature at National Dong Hwa University (Taiwan).
Thomas Honegger is Professor for Mediaeval Studies at the University of Jena (Germany).
