Equinoxes 2011 : "The missing link" / "Le chaînon manquant"

April 15-16, 2011   |  Brown University    |   Providence, Rhode Island

Keynote speaker:  Julia DouthwaiteProfessor of FrenchUniversity of Notre-Dame

In what ways is the idea of the missing link relevant for literary studies? Generated by the science of the 19th century, ‘missing links' represent the transitional and intermediary forms that enable the construction of a unified history of the species. Transposed to the field of French and francophone studies, a focus on the interstices presents a useful vantage point for rethinking literature. It leads, on the one hand, to the exploration of unknown or undervalued zones of the corpus through the study of dissident voices, minor genres and deliberately forgotten discourses, and on the other, to the possibility of questioning what we “know” of literature, that is to say, the possibility of tackling literary affirmations and theories, both contemporary and historical.

In the aim of unveiling these transitional states and figures, ignored by literary historians or revisited by the curious eye, we invite scholars in French studies to share their most recent work. We invite submissions in literary, cultural, and media studies dealing with all periods and genres of cultural production from all areas of the French-speaking world.

Potential avenues of exploration may include but are not limited to:

hybridity and transition, passage and movement, historic bifurcations periodization and the classification of texts : corpus and literary canon literature as an object of knowledge links between literature and philosophy paradigms, power and marginality the creation and fixing of genres translatio imperii et studii  the notion of minority literature intertextuality, articulations/ruptures, continuity/discontinuity episteme, epoch, period

Over the course of our two-day exchange, we hope to use the concept of the missing link to gain a more heterodox, and thus fuller, picture of literature, in addition to exposing new tendencies, domains and modes of investigation in French and Francophone studies.

Graduate students who wish to participate in the conference should submit an abstract of roughly 250 words.  The presentations, in English or in French, should not exceed 20 minutes.  Please send abstracts with name, institutional affiliation and address to Equinoxes@brown.edu before or on February 15, 2011

The conference proceedings will be published in the Equinoxes electronic journal (http://www.brown.edu/Research/Equinoxes).
